"We got here safely" (MIL vent)

That is the text I have just received from my MIL. Last week I got "SIL's doing that thing today" and a while ago I got "I managed to get it". I have no idea what any of these texts mean. I have a very good memory, MIL has not told me or DH anything about going out today or SIL's "thing" or "it".

This is a habit that she has, equivalent to one of those posts on Facebook where the child posts "There just no point anymore" and everyone is supposed to rush and ask for information. I think MIL does it for drama, expecting us to beg for information which I have done for years. DH ignores her which is why she texts me. I'm not doing it anymore.

This morning I just texted back "Great, have a good time" and now there is silence. I know she knows that I don't know what she's talking about but what can she do about it?

Have I BU?

No I think your response was perfect. I would reply back with similar every single time!

'Thanks for the info Smile'

I get where you are coming from, i would find it annoying too but for the sake of peace and an easy life surely its just as easy to text back "what did you get" as it is to text back "sounds great"

That’s a brilliant response! Well done!

Your respond was perfectly fine. My MIL does that too. I go for "bright and breezy" in my tone of response.

Pickleypickles Because that is what I've done for years and she's got worse and worse. Everything she says (she does it in conversation also) is a riddle. I can't take it anymore!

My ex MIL used to do very similar. I would text back 'How lovely'.

Wow she sounds absolutely vile. I'd go NC

Hmm

A simple "ok" covers pretty much everything.

"have a good time"? I hope she wasn't going to a funeral!

I'd wait a while before texting back your response so she sees you are not really interested in having a role in the drama.

I know someone like this. I just send back a thumbs up each time, they're doing it a lot less now!

Well if she is, then she ought to have said so, instead of sending stupid, attention seeking texts.

I think your response is perfect and I would keep using that approach. No need to be nasty with her, you can say it perfectly nicely.

Not sure how those texts would warrant going NC and causing a family rift though Confused

WhyBeDennyDifferent I think you've missed the sarcasm there.

One of the worst ones was something like "We're here" sent late at night, followed by "Where are you?" We got out of bed thinking she was stood on our doorstep!

She wasn't, she was just trying to prompt a conversation.

I always text back "awesome!"

Well done for keeping it up for years. I'd have no patience for that type of bollocks.

Are you sure she's not just accidentally texting the wrong person? My mum used to constantly text my landline instead of my mobile before I changed the contact in her phone. Maybe she has someone else in her address book with your name?

I can’t believe people do this through text as well. It’s annoying enough when it’s on Facebook.

brizzledrizzle · 18/03/2018 09:22

Go NC just for that? Just ignore it and move on, why would anybody deprive children of a grandparent just for something so trivial?!

It'd annoy me too but that response is way over the top as it's only appropriate when travelling back from your house when the weather is bad.

Are you confident this is deliberate and not genuine confusion / misconception? Maybe she honestly believes everyone knows what she means.....?

This is why I like Facebook Messenger as you can just send back a thumbs up.
