AIBU?

To think Kayleigh is actually a bloody good song?

Watching old TOTP from the 80s and I've now realised that Kayleigh is a rollicking good song, after having dismissed it as crap for most of my life. Even more disconcerting - I also thought Fish looked rather fine in a kilt, even if his hair was a bit shite.

I was forced to watch the same TOTP and I still thought it was shit, tbh.

Enjoyed Madonna and Billy Ocean though.

Kayleigh is a classic and I agree the lead singer is a bit hot even with the mullet.

Love it ! I was expecting in 1985 and was going to call my baby Kayleigh if it was a girl (he was'nt) . I bet there isn't a Kayleigh older than 33 as no one had heard of it before the song.

YANBU Lady Nina is also a great song by them too.

" I bet there isn't a Kayleigh older than 33 as no one had heard of it before the song."

nope I knew a Kayleigh who was my age when that song came out (about 33 years ago).

It's not to my taste, but yes it's a great song, very memorable.

I bet there are a lot of Kayleighs who are in their early 30s though Kizzywizz.

Hated that song in the 80s and still hate it now. I knew you'd been watching TOTP reruns!! I tape them so I can fast forward the stuff I don't like.

I never liked the image of dancing in stilettos in the snow.

I used to have nightmares about the lead singer of Marillion dancing in stilettos in the snow Grin

One of my all time faves, can’t help it, don’t care. And I love the name Kayleigh.

All of Marillion's songs have amazing lyrics, most of them were written by Fish who has an English degree. The lyrics are amazingly complex compared to the majority of current songs.

Sorry folks but Kayleigh is shit then and it is now. We watched the same programme and groaned loudly when that came on. Such a poor imitation of Genesis.

Just listen to the real thing - GENESIS

Oh and the lyrics were very funny indeed - almost as funny as that prat in a kilt.

Kayleigh is probably my least favourite Fish-era Marillion song, but I do like it.

Yes, Marillion (then) were clearly influenced by Gabriel-era Genesis, but I loved them in the 80s and still play all the old albums now. I saw Marillion (Fishless) live a few years ago - tremendous prog.

I never liked the image of dancing in stilettos in the snow.

But you didn't mind the image of loving on the floor in Belsize Park?

It was played at a funeral of a friend who died in 6th form back in 1990 - it still reminds me of him whenever hear it. Can’t say it’s a great song, but does bring back some happy and sad memories.

'Kayleigh' isn't a great example of lyrics from their songs as it was far more mainstream and 'pop' than most of their work, hence why it was such a huge hit. If you listen to their other songs, you'll find lots of amazing imagery and poetry which knock many other bands out of the park.

An example from 'Assassing' below, but there are many others.

I am the assassin, with tongue forged from eloquence
I am the assassin, providing your nemesis
On the sacrificial altar to success, my friend
Unleash a stranger from a kiss, my friend
No incantations of remorse, my friend
Unsheathe the blade within the voice, my friend
Who decorates the scarf with the fugi knot
Who camouflaged emotion in a thousand yard stare
Who gouged the notches from the family tree
Who hypnotised the guilt in career rhythm trance
Assassing, assassing, assassing, assassing
Listen as the syllables of slaughter cat with calm precision
Patterned frosty phrases rape your ears and sow the ice incision
Apocalyptic alphabet casting spell the creed of tempered diction
Adjectives of annihilation bury the point beyond redemption
Venomous verbs of ruthless candour plagiarise assassins fervour
A friend in need is a friend that bleeds
Let bitter silence infect the wound
You were a sentimental mercenary in a free fire zone
Parading a Hollywood conscience
You were a fashionable objector with a uniform fetish
Pavlovian slaver at the cash till ring of success
A non com observer - I assassin the collector - defector
So you resigned yourself to failure, my friend
And I emerged the chilling stranger, my friend
To eradicate the problem, my friend
Unsheathe the blade within the voice
I am the assassin
I am the assassin
And what do you call assassins who accuse assassins anyway, my friend?

I don't think those lyrics are 'amazingly complex' just a bit pretentious and overly verbose. Just saying,

..in fact (warming to theme now) they sound like they were written by an English lit student who smokes a lot of pot, heading for a third.Grin

Script for a jester's tear.

So here I am once more in the playground of the broken hearts
One more experience, one more entry in a diary, self-penned
Yet another emotional suicide overdosed on sentiment and pride
Too late to say I love you, too late to re-stage the play
Abandoning the relics in my playground of yesterday
I'm losing on the swings, I'm losing on the roundabouts
I'm losing on the swings, I'm losing on the roundabouts
Too much, too soon, too far to go, too late to play, the game is over
T the game is over
So here I am once more in the playground of the broken heart
I'm losing on the swings, losing on the roundabouts, the game is over, over
Yet another emotional suicide overdosed on sentiment and pride
I'm losing on the swings, losing on the roundabouts, the game is over
Too late to say I love you, too late to re-stage the play
The game is over
I act the role in classic style of a martyr carved with twisted smile
To bleed the lyric for this song to write the rites to right my wrongs
An epitaph to a broken dream to exercise this silent scream
A scream that's borne from sorrow
I never did write that love song, the words just never seemed to flow
Now sad in reflection did I gaze through perfection
And examine the shadows on the other side of the morning
And examine the shadows on the other side of mourning
Promised wedding now a wake
The fool escaped from paradise will look over his shoulder and cry
Sit and chew on daffodils and struggle to answer why?
As you grow up and leave the playground
Where you kissed your prince and found your frog
Remember the jester that showed you tears, the script for tears
So I'll hold our peace forever when you wear your bridal gown
In the silence of my shame the mute that sang the sirens' song
Has gone solo in the game, I've gone solo in the game
But the game is over
Can you still say you love me
