Was in Subway earlier (yup IAdefU for that) and went over to get the drinks out of the fridge cabinet. Only choices were Pepsi max, diet Pepsi, club zero, 7up free. I had a bottle of water in the end, as I can't stand artificial sweeteners. Called over to my OH the choices (classy) and the guy behind the till said it wasn't Subway but Pepsi's fault and this was how it was going to be from now on. WTF? I get it's cheaper with the sugar tax etc but it seems to be more and more how this is going. I'd rather drink sugar than the chemicals pumped into the sugar free versions. Just feels like the element of choice is stealthily being removed. Tried a quick Google but couldn't see anything about this. I was still in the process of forgiving Subway for ditching Coke! I'm not about to combust with rage about it but just wondered what you all thought.

Yadnbu . I hate sweeteners and I think there is going to be such a problem in future with it. I'd much rather have a sweet drink in moderation than some sweetened crap.

A sugary drink is my treat. I don't like the fact that my choice has been taken away. I hate the taste of artificial sweetener.
It makes me angry that thus is a thing now.

YANBU.

I am an adult and capable of making my own choices

YANBU, I'm fully capable of understanding the 'dangers' of drinking a lipsmacking, thirst quenching (I can't remember the rest of the words) full-fat (😋😋) coke if I want one. I've never touched diet/sugar free versions, what's the point? It's like low fat cheese or half fat butter, it tastes just plain wrong.

Yeah I found this in subway the other day too. I did a Google and couldn't see anything about it. It's been kept out the papers that's for sure. I think pizzahut might have done the same thing. Possibly some pubs also as I keep asking for normal and feel like I've been given diet a few times now.

It is annoying and I too don't like artificial sweeteners. I would probably end up getting water or orange juice. So guess it will make me healthier... But I don't really eat out /drink out much so it's usually a treat when I do get one

The chap in the Subway I go to sometimes said they don't stock the sugary ones because of the sugar tax. Not sure how true it is but kind of explained it away to me...

My diabetic sister has a need for sugary drinks. If she forgets her glucose tablets when out and about she says the best thing is Lucozade or full sugar coke/fizzy drink.

Don't the full sugar drinks usually contain sweeteners anyway?

It used to be lucozade, but that's now partly sweeteners. My friend's son, who has T1, is furious!

YANBU. Fizzy drinks are my weekend treat. I hate the diet stuff.

Well exactly, you don't go to these establishments as a healthy alternative! I don't buy fizzy drinks for the house so it would only be once a fortnight or so I'd actually have one. Plus I would seriously question how much healthier the sugar free versions really are. I know the original fruitshoots (rather than my5 or indeed a giant mountain of sweets) send my eldest complete loopy.

YANBU. I get awful headaches if I consume anything containing Aspartame or Ace-K. I normally drink water, but like a full fat coke (or similar) as an occasional treat. Guess I’ll be drinking Wine now instead... Wink

*completely.

Yeah I think they've done it with Lucozade too! Sure the clue is right in the name there! What is the point of it otherwise? Not going to cure any illnesses cough hangovers cough with sweeteners!

Barr’s has ruined Irn Bru by taking out half the sugar and replacing it with artificial sweeteners. I understand they’ve done it to make sure the cost doesn’t go up but I’d rather have the option of a full sugar drink even if it does cost a little more. If I wanted to drink diet, I would buy diet!

@ReachOutAndTouchDave I got told that as well last time I went to Subway and asked for full fat Pepsi.

@HodorHodorHodor Same here, it seems more and more places offer Pepsi instead of Coke nowAngry

@squiglet111 Harvester is another one that has stopped offering full fat PepsiAngry

Sweeteners make me quite ill, either vomiting or an upset stomach. I was given a Diet Coke when I asked for coke in a pub the other day without being told. I took one sip and took it back to the bar assuming it was a mistake.
Nope! Apparently they’re doing it to everyone due to the sugar tax.

I was very angry, pointed out that I’m intolerant and they have fed me something that can make me sick and asked for their manager. He refunded me for not only my drink but my whole meal and apologised, and when I pointed out that this could seriously affect diabetics too he promised to make staff inform customers before they’re served. Bit shocked it took a customer to point out to someone in hospitality that they shouldn’t be doing that.

YANBU if you also accept that by making poor food choices regularly you also shouldn’t expect the NHS to pick up the pieces. I know that’s not what everyone wants to hear, but taking personal responsibility for choice has to work both ways.

Not in my local harvester clevs, was in there today and had full fat Pepsi out of the machine.

And I agree clear labelling is essential, there is no excuse for not highlighting to customers what is being served.

There must be a marketing opportunity for artificial sweetener free lemonade.

@Jammydodger81 That's interesting because the two I've been into in recent months have not had normal
Pepsi. Perhaps it's a regional thing?

Until recently you could buy 7up, lucozade & ribena with just sugar but they’ve now replaced some of the sugar with sweetners and they taste foul. I simply won’t buy them anymore. I’d gladly pay double for the occasional full sugar, no sweeteners, drink but the choice is no longer available. The new versions are truly horrible :(
