AIBU?

To think my boss is a twat

I'm ill. I have an awful virus and chest infection so I called work this morning and said I will do some lighter work if he can give me something to do that isn't strenuous. He agreed.
I go in and he fires me on to a packed, busy fast paced job but I muddle in and get on with it.
After a while I started to feel a lot worse and ended up shaking and burning hot then I started to feel sick. I ran to loo after telling my boss I'm sorry but I think I'm going to be sick.
After freshening up he just ignored me. Let me carry on with the job and didn't ask if it was ok.
I said to him in going to go home and he didn't even look at me and just said right ok. He did that infront of everyone and his expression on his face was as if he thought I was faking it. I could tell he thought I was at it.
I feel so hurt and under appreciated. I made an effort to come in and got on with what he asked but when push came to shove I just wasn't up to being at work.

I left feeling embarrassed and under valued.
I wish I hadn't bothered now but if you phone in sick he always suggests coming in to do lighter work so thought that's what he would have wanted.
Aibu to think he was an arsehole and should have more empathy?

Well next time he offers you lighter duties you say no because last time you made me do xyz which made me worse.

Sounds like a turbotwat. Bet he's the type to take a day off at the slightest sniffle.

I've been made to feel totally embarrassed. His eyes were almost rolling.
Made to feel like a drama queen who needs time off for a cold....but it's a chest infection and my temperature is making me feel sick and dizzy and I just refuse to make myself worse for them. I sounded like a frog when I called in I could hardly speak. I am mortified they think I'm trying to Skyve off. I am a hard working person who has a great work ethic and now I feel so small and not wanted.

YABU for even going in feeling like that.

And your boss is a arrogant twat.

Hope you feel better soon Thanks

Why did you go in if you were that ill? If you are ill you are ill no point in being a martyr and risk giving your illness to colleagues.

Report
Ilovemaryberry · 17/03/2018 12:19

To be honest I went in because you just get grief down the phone when you phone in and wanted to show that I cared about my job. Last time I phoned in he asked me about my symptoms and said they were short staffed and wanted to give easier jobs to those that were unwell.
I really wish I hadn't bothered. He's made me feel like a twat.

He sounds like an arse but you sound oversensitive.

Report
TenancyTroublesAgain · 17/03/2018 12:32

The op is ill so being sensitive is kind of a given.

Report
JacksGirl123 · 17/03/2018 12:40

Possibly, but feeling hurt, unappreciated, embarassed, unvalued, small and not wanted seems like a bit of an over-reaction to someone not paying much attention when an employee goes home sick.

When you are genuinely sick and he reacts as if I am not genuine and trying to get out of work which I'm very confident that's what he was thinking from his facial expressions and ignoring me after I was sick.
It's a total insult when I'm a hard working member of staff who cares about my job and my sickness record.
I was made to feel small and I feel embarrassed because he thinks I'm faking it or exaggerating when I actually feel really shit.
Ibu to have even considered going in at all and ibu to think my employers even cared about me as a person. I am a sensitive person but I don't think I'm being oversenitive.
I just wish he had said something like go home and rest and thanks for coming in. A bit of gratitude and good manners.

If he is obstructive when people call on sick it was pretty obvious that he wasn't going to appreciate your efforts.

Next time you know what to do.

You should have stayed at home. You 'phoned up saying can I do lighter work?
He said yes then you came in ill then rushed off announcing yo're going to be sick, came back and expected him to pay you attention, he didn't. Then you said you were going home and he said fine. Now you're all upset and over-emotional and coming up with conclusions that people don't care about you.

It is all a bit dramatic and has been a waste of your and his time. Stay at home next time. You want gratitude for being a martyr and no-one ever is grateful because it's completely unnecessary.

Go on sick leave till you feel better. With a chest infection, you really do need not to go back to work too soon.

Then start looking for an employer who treats you better.

Hope you feel better soon

I don't understand how it was dramatic. I gave it a go, I tried.
I think it's just common decency to thank people for trying when they have made an effort. I also think rude and disrespectful to not ask someone how they are when they are clearly ill.
I wasn't as ill when I first went in and if I was as ill as I am now then I wouldn't have went in at all.
They always say it's better to go in and get sent home rather than to phone in.

Get yourself a doctor's note. And report your boss. He is a dick.

Report
falsepriest · 17/03/2018 13:20

Lesson learned. Don't bother next time. If you're ill... you're ill. Leave the dick to pick up the slack.

Report
ilovesooty · 17/03/2018 13:28

I don't see who the OP is going to report him to, or for what.

You were either well enough to work, or not.
You clearly weren't. So you should have stayed at home instead of the "lighter duties" thing.

Yes perfume I've learnt my lesson now. No point trying to please other people and will be putting myself first from now on.
I had a sick day just before Xmas with the same thing as I have now and I also had to use one in Feb for a hospital appt I had so I was reluctant to use any more.
Apart from those absences i haven't had any more and I've been with the company 15 months. I have been incredibly unlucky to get sick quite often all within the same timeframe so I didn't want to take the piss.

HR, for putting pressure on staff members to the point of them working when genuinely ill.

Report
ilovesooty · 17/03/2018 23:07

I think proving that and making a report viable would be very difficult. I'm usually very keen on going through HR but in this case the OP didn't even attempt to call in sick.

If you are sick don't go in. I learnt this from my aunt who worked somewhere for 7 years. Struggled in when sick. She was made redundant one day and given something like 2 days' notice. Some places and people just don't care about their workers.

I hope that you get better soon.
