AIBU?

To ask what IS this 'virus'?

DS has a(nother) virus.

We've been to the GP twice since Saturday, because his temp has been consistently over 39.5, and slow to respond to calpol/Ibuprofen (better response to calpol unusually for him).

I've taken him to the GP because he often gets tonsillitis and becomes very very unwell (have a look at my posting history for 6 months of drama) - but this time there is no sign of anything except a viral sore throat and slightly snotty - literally nothing. He is teething about 5 teeth simultaneously but I know that that wouldn't cause a fever like this.

Apparently lots of kids at the nursery are the same - high fever, fine and bubbly as ever when they've got calpol in them, but as soon as it wears off, they're in a state with super high temps.

WHAT IS IT? AND WILL IT PLEASE FUCK OFF BEFORE I LOSE MY JOB, OR MY MIND?????

On a deadline for a project and my absence has not gone down at all well - but am LP with v little support network here, so it's pretty much not an option to not stay at home with him. Cant take him in with me as I usually would because everyones working flat out towards the deadline and he's a distraction.

Not really an AIBU, just a wail of despair....

My whole family is on round three of this since Christmas. So yet again I spend my days off lying on the couch, taking paracetamol for my fever and cough syrup (this time round) Yuck.

DS has just had this. Fever up and down for three days, a bit sniffy. Fine once he's had Nurofen.

My LO has this, at one point temp went to 40.2. Like yours, took a while for ibuprofen to work. LO started to get back to themselves after 4/5 days

God its never-ending. Woke up from his nap at 3 and seemed 'healed' - I was jubilant.

By 4 had started shaking uncontrollably and temp through the roof again

Spent an hour with the GP, who was rather worried about how high his temp was AFTER meds, but can't find anything 'wrong' with him that's obvious.

Am back at home now under strict instructions to take him straight to a&e if he gets any worse, and a detailed letter from the GP outlining his medical history. I think she fully expects us to end up there tonight.

As it is ,DS is currently nudey, pale but cool now the calpol and ibuprofen is both in his system, rolling playdough into little balls and scattering them all over the carpet, and trying to stick raisins in the end of his willy....

Im a nervous wreck and wish I could close my eyes and wake up when he's verbal and can tell me what the fucks wrong.

Ooh DD2 has this at the moment.

I'm trying to work out if it's connected to the rash she had last week. Especially as DD1 now has the rash.

What's the rash like @minipie ? My DS had a strange rash all over his torso and back before his current virus kicked in.....

So relieved to read that others are experiencing this - DS had four days of on/off fever, only perking up after medicine. No fever since Sat but he’s still not himself and was pretty much miserable most of today - he’s had a few nights of bad sleep so at points has been inconsolable with tiredness. DM is convinced I need to take him to the GP but I’m not so sure... Teething back molars at the same time just to make it even more fun, too!

oh dear god the bugs weve had this year.

dd started with a cold...cough, sore throat....lasted about a week.
ds had a cold/sore throat/miserable for a few days.
then dh was literally bed bound for a few days, still coughing 4 weeks later!!!
then dd got another.... ended up in hospital coughing up blood (though apparently its just because shes irritated her stomach/throat whilst coughing)
Then i got the bug... i ended up laid on the sofa freezing cold and not doing much...still coughing a week later.

its never ending, and theyre not just normal "colds" you can carry on with....they literally floor you!!!

Just waiting for the kids to get chickenpox now which is doing the rounds at school :( knowing our luck they'll get it ready for half term in 2 weeks time!!

hope your lo is feeling better soon x x

ginyoga - Slightly red, very slightly (but hardly) raised, a connected all over mottled pattern rather than separate spots iyswim. Started off soft to the touch then turned dry and sandpapery feeling. Itchy for about 24h. Torso and back and a bit on the limbs. Sound familiar?

3 of my dc have had this last week too. I was waiting for spots, or limbs dropping off, or something, but, no, it just went away.
However, me and the other 2 dc have been absolutely flattened with a hideous cold/flu thing, dd1 had an entire week off school with it, and ds1 still isn't well 10 days later.
I'm assuming they're linked, and the younger dc just didn't get the rest of the bug, but who knows?

Report
minipie · 13/03/2018 21:23

Not quite womb as the rash came before the fever not after, and it was itchy, and also the rash in that link looks more "spotty" whereas DD's was more an overall blotchiness. I did take her to GP with the rash and was told it seemed non specific ie not linked to any particular named condition... (mind you at that point she didn't have the temp or cough)

Mini pie, that sounds like the rash my DS has when he had scarlet fever. The sandpaper feeling and blotchinsss. He had quite a high temp too. Have you been to the GP? He needed antibiotics for it

oh good - I'm very sorry for all your poorly small ones, but misery loves company and all that...

DS has had a rash - spotty, all over, comes and goes. Think its generic 'viral' rash, but still don't like it. Spending a lot of time checking if the spots are still blanching.

He's currently asleep on the sofa with a urine bag on (need a sample) while I try and get some of the work done that my boss is demanding.

I feel fit to drop myself, to be honest. When DS is poorly, the wheels come off a bit for us- just had to ask a friends partner to come out on a mercy mission with calpol as we've run out and I havent got a car sorted since we moved here (not enough money, not enough time). Luckily (touch wood) I havent caught anything from him since the stomach bug before Christmas, so its perhaps not as bad as it could be.

I hope you and yours are all on the mend soon!

minipie Has anyone checked your little ones tongue and throat? The sandpapery, lacey rash sounds a bit like scarlet fever.
Just a thought as it is going around near us.

My dd has this generic, rotten virus too. She has an all over spotty rash, snots and a cough. She hasn’t bee properly well in over a month.
I can’t wait for her to be well. I can’t xope with having her attached to me all of the time for much longer and she is so miserable. Poor little darling.

Minipie def sounds like scarlet fever, both me and DS have just finished a 10 day course of antibiotics last week as we've both had it. DS now seems to have this other virus, totally not himself, croaky voice, not sleeping as well as normal. Hope everyone's little ones get well soon!

minipie · 13/03/2018 22:34

Bugger and eek. There is actually scarlet fever in DD's nursery but I had discounted that as the GP told me it was nothing specific.... gah. (but that was last week, before she had the cough and cold symptoms and the proper high temps).

I will have a look at tongue and throat tomorrow - what am I looking for? Will try to get urgent GP appt too (it's like pulling teeth though)

Report
Believeitornot · 13/03/2018 22:38

Yes def check for scarlet fever.
My ds was the most il he’d ever been recently. Perked up after two days then crashed again and finally recovered a week later. We didn’t give much in the way of meds to let him burn out the virus. (He’s 8 though so older).

Report
WinkyisbackontheButterBeer · 13/03/2018 22:39

White at back of throat and ‘strawberry’ tongue.
It may not be but there is a lot of it about at the moment and your description of the sandpaper rash reminded me of something I read when trying to work out whether there was anything more specific than a virus wrong with dd.

Professor Dan Davis, Immunology at Manchester University was on Sunday Brunch this week talking about his new book, I think it's called The Beautiful Cure. He said fever is part of the body's defence mechanism rather than a symptom, which I thought was interesting, although sorry that doesn't help, so hope all the poorly DCs get well soon.

My nearly 8 month old has had this. 39.4 was her temp and she was screaming. Took her to hospital and no symptoms! Said calpol/ibuprofen. She's better today after 4 days of it. Agh.

Report
ginyogarepeat · 14/03/2018 07:28

@minipie - yes, sounds exactly like ours, except limbs weren't affected. I got it checked out and was told "viral rash"; his temp was slightly raised then and apparently throat and inner ear slightly red but no sign of infection. He then proceeded to be very congested and complaining of s sore mouth for several days, then the snot started.....and hasn't stopped. Never seen so much mucous - eyes and nose! A week of that and now we're being kept awake all night by a cough - it's never-ending!!

Hope everyone's littles recover soon once Spring hopefully makes its appearance!
