AIBU?

To think you don’t beep your horn at pedestrians with sleeping children in prams?

Just had a total arsehole do this to me, when we were crossing the road. Apparently I wasn’t moving fast enough and I got a mouthful of abuse too.

You don’t do that, do you? I have joint pain, severe pain and depression and DS is ASD and I’d just got him to sleep.

Why do some people enjoy being such knobs to others?

It's against highway code guidance to do that unless it's to prevent an accident.
So no yanbu.
Sounds like a rage driver

SuperLoudPoppingAction · 25/02/2018 14:03

*ragey

Makingworkwork · 25/02/2018 14:04

I would cross the road very, very slow.

RochelleGoyle · 25/02/2018 14:04

Lots of thoroughly inconsiderate and unpleasant people out there unfortunately. Sad

Flutterbyeee · 25/02/2018 14:05

He probably wasn't aware of your medical history.

CatsForgotPassword · 25/02/2018 14:05

Normally it wouldn’t bother me but I’ve just started to feel better after a horrible time physically and emotionally and then out of nowhere someone is abusive to me. I shouldn’t let it get to me but I’m vulnerable at the moment.

Unless the pedestrian has done something dangerous like walk into traffic there should be no need to beep at them at all

If you had done something dangerous then the horn should be used regardless of sleeping babies. In fact in a truly dangerous situation I doubt the driver would have time to process that you had a sleeping baby just “danger!” And hit the brakes and the horn.

SaucyJack · 25/02/2018 14:10

You were born with middle fingers for a reason mate.

theymademejoin · 25/02/2018 14:10

Sleeping children in prams are irrelevant. Your medical history is irrelevant. You shouldn't beep your horn at crossing pedestrians unless you need to alert them to danger.

CatsForgotPassword · 25/02/2018 14:14

Don’t worry, I told them to piss off, but it just seems a cunty thing to do.

They true but it seems worse when there’s kids asleep and you never know if someone is walking slow due to disability so people should be aware imo.

I agree that your medical history is completely irrelevant - as was your sleeping child.

MN also peddles out the you should only use your horn to alert others etc but in reality people use it all their time due to being pissed off/angry.

Loads of people get road rage and sadly you just experienced one of those people.

WorraLiberty · 25/02/2018 14:38

You shouldn't beep your horn at anyone unless it's necessary, although I don't get the sleeping baby bit, as how is anyone to know whether your child is awake or asleep?

Also, there are lots of noises/beeps etc when you're out and about.

The driver sounds like a complete arsehole though, for all the other reasons.

DevilTree · 25/02/2018 14:40

That's a remarkably early diagnosis of ASD! How old is your DS?

YANBU, the driver was a tosser.

CatsForgotPassword · 25/02/2018 14:40

as how is anyone to know whether your child is awake or asleep?

He’s in the pram with eyes closed, it’s a buggy type one.

2 and a half. It’s not official yet but I’ve been told it’s extremely likely, but they’ve only been so certain because both I and his biological father have ASD too.

What's a "peasant voice"? Is it a very coarse common accent with limited vocabulary? Grin

It's hard to tell. You were slowly crossing the road. An approaching car beeps their horn to alert you of their presence on the road?

It's annoying but I wouldn't call it abusive or dwell too much on it. I hope it didn't ruin your walk.

Nicknacky · 25/02/2018 14:43

I would beep at a pedestrian with a pram in certain circumstances, such as obliviously crossing the road without looking and I was warning them of my presence. If I had to do that I wouldn't give a toss if the baby was sleeping.

WorraLiberty · 25/02/2018 14:43

Still though, the driver's behind a glass screen and at least a few feet away.

ivykaty44 · 25/02/2018 14:44

Twat in a car

CatsForgotPassword · 25/02/2018 14:45

Worra I suppose that’s fair, they may not know he’s asleep. Just frustrating for me as he doesn’t sleep often and gets grumpy when tired.

MaisyPops · 25/02/2018 14:47

They shouldn't beep at anyone (medical history / child sleeping is irrelevant) without good reason.

It might have been they were alerting you to the fact they were there if you were going noticeably slower than typical and not paying attention to the traffic in that direction.
It might be they're a dickhead.
Who knows.

I doubt he had time to register whether your toddler was awake or asleep.

DevilTree · 25/02/2018 14:49

Ah, so buggy not pram (to me, pram means they're lying flat, so a 'babe in arms'). Thanks for clarifying.

mikeyssister · 25/02/2018 14:50

Why didn't you cross at a crossing?
