AIBU?

AIBU to think this is pretty obnoxious?

I live in a medium-sized Home Counties town. As you drive in to the town, you drive through an oldy woldy village with several cottages, a village green and a pub. Let’s call this village Sydham Green.

In plain view of the road, there is also a very large house - definitely modern, but built in sort of manor-style.

The inhabitants of this house recently put up a sign at the front of their front garden, by the pavement - a pole with a small wooden board hanging from it - that said Sydham Hall.

A few weeks later, they decided that that sign clearly wasn’t noticeable enough, so they now have a huge sign, about 2 by 2.5 metres, with ‘SYDHAM HALL’ written on in huge letters, propped up against the side of the house.

It’s not used as a guesthouse or for any events, it is purely a residential house. And it’s not a historical landmark, it’s a new build.

Is it just me who thinks this is rather obnoxious behaviour? It seems to me like they’re flaunting their wealth to anyone who drives past and to all the villagers who live in far smaller houses. It’s not even like it’s a real authentic stately home - it was built about 20 years ago!

Oh bless them. Yadnbu. Don't you need permission for a huge fuck off sign?

Greensleeves · 23/02/2018 12:37

The Beckhams have a lot to answer for

Fattymcfaterson · 23/02/2018 12:40

Do they have problems with deliverys? Maybe they're sick of amazon drivers etc no knowing where they are

greendale17 · 23/02/2018 12:47

They sound like pretentious idiots. Fancy naming a house a hall!

LifeBeginsAtGin · 23/02/2018 12:54

Pinch the sign or turn it around

pictish · 23/02/2018 13:07

You could tiptoe out and write “Built 2017” in marker pen underneath. Just to make a point.

Probably this. It sounds like they're seriously frustrated and showing it.

FizzyGreenWater · 23/02/2018 13:12

Even better:

'....the Ancestral Home of the Esteemed Sydham Hall Family, for Over 100 Months'

KurriKurri · 23/02/2018 13:15

Could you change the last 'l' of Hall to an 'f' and add 'wits' after it?

Please do this

ObscuredbyFog · 23/02/2018 13:18

I'd guess it's deliveries too. Somewhere Hall usually has a gatehouse then a long drive which leads to a pretty old building, often not visible from the road.

Definitely check if they need planning permission for their sign Grin

UpstartCrow · 23/02/2018 13:19

If only 'Sydhamn' was actually 'Shillerton'.

GabsAlot · 23/02/2018 13:22

ot but how do u just name your house do you have to go through the council

sounds awful though

brizzledrizzle · 23/02/2018 13:22

It's so their friends can find the place when arriving by helicopter that must it, they surely can't be showing off can they?

Aprilshowerswontbelong · 23/02/2018 13:23

Agree to modify the sign to appear rude /distasteful in some great way!!

GU24Mum · 23/02/2018 13:24

They'll get bored of it with any luck. I feel your pain though............ when I was growing up, people moved in a couple of houses from my parents and put up a huge metal arch at the end of the drive saying "Tara"..... !

I actually think it is a delivery problem that they are having. Probably meant to have a go at delivery drivers and not anyone else.

haba · 23/02/2018 13:28

Brizzle- could they not just paint the name on the roof for helicopters? Grin

Let them crack on, does it bother anyone really? All 'Hall's started as new builds at some point... maybe they're being farsighted and thinking about their GGGGGGGG- grandchildren?

ADuckNamedSplash · 23/02/2018 13:28

YANBU. A perfectly normal house in our town sold a few years ago and shortly thereafter gained a sign proclaiming it, "TOWNNAME Manor"! Hmm

haba · 23/02/2018 13:29

GU24 where I grew up 'Tara' meant 'good-bye' !

YANBU. Definitely obnoxious behaviour... but might it have been built on the site of a previous building known as 'Sydham Hall'? Perhaps that's why.

Chatterbitch · 23/02/2018 13:29

Please add "built 2017". Or add a sign saying "Sydham Castle" to your own home.

ppeatfruit · 23/02/2018 13:32

I'm surprised that your local council hasn't seen it and got their planning department to make them take it down.

The owners of a house near my ILS completely covered their front wall with a new one made mostly with bottle ends. They had to take it down Grin
