As basic as my headline suggests. And to add one more thing...yet they take random advice from an absolute idiot who swears that's the whole truth and nothing but the truth!
My friend asked me for advice on a financial issue (I have a law/Accountancy background) I gave my advice BUT as with all advice I warned her that the information she needed was better sought from a professional in that field...I fucking sign posted her! YET she completely ignored my warning asked an absolute t##t, got wrong advice and still she says but your advice was equally rubbish...YES IT WAS COS I DON'T SPECIALISE IN THAT FUCKING FIELD! I'D GO TO SOMEONE WHO DID! I WARNED YOU!!!
I DID NOT TELL YOU TO ASK DORA WHO KNOWS SHIT ALL DID I!?!?
Sorry but I thought it'd be a small rant.

Jeez....why are you so annoyed over something so minor?

Report
Ijustwanttogohome21 · 20/02/2018 19:35

It wasn't minor, my friend lost quite a bit of money taking this idiots advice and I'm cross that she didn't just seek professional advice...yes it will have cost a bit of money but the loss she's now suffered is far worst.

I guess I'm cross to that no matter how many times I give sensible advice my friends or family always go out of their way to take the most WTF advice ever

Stop giving advice. Just politely tell people that you only ever advise in a paid professional capacity and point them to someone else.

Yep. Pisses me off as well. Why ask me if you're not going to listen. Grrrrr

Sometimes it's the way advice is given

Ijustwanttogohome21 · 20/02/2018 19:48

That's what I basically did JeRev. I told her my knowledge is limited in this area and she'd be better off going to x y or z also advised her to make sure they had proper indemnity in place if it all fell through. And yes I said what I would do as a normal everyday person...like all I make personal mistakes...but it'd be my mistake when I didn't take on professional advice.
Sorry I know it's all silly to most...just needed a rant

If you are after a rant then go ahead. But you should know this in your capacity as an advisor - it happens all the time.

Just look at MN health advice, for example, unless your head is hanging off you shouldn't go to A&E.

I personally think cabin that most of the time ppl ask because they think I'll just say o go on I'll sort it for you...i do this but only when it's something I know 100% I can do...its like they hear me go blah blah yes I'll do it. But in this case all she heard was well I'd do this blah blah blah (conveniently ignoring get professional advice please!)

I know Vald, i just hate feeling bad that she's off with me and I'm upset she's incurred a loss. Also my friends and family are utterly dramatic so I shouldn't expect anything else really. I do love them though...except t##t head!

Sometimes people only hear what they want to hear despite it not always being in their best interests.

My in laws are the worst for this.

Them: Who's a good property lawyer? Oh ok thanks I'll call them. Oh they're too expensive.

Me: you get what you pay for. Your son and I are both lawyers and we know. Don't go with the cheap one.

Them: don't care I'm going to go with the cheap one.

Two weeks later.

Them: my solicitor is shit.

Arrgghhhhhhhh does my fucking head in.

She ignored your advice and is now reaping the consequence. Not much reason here to be annoyed, let this one slide and chill. Smile

You can't force another adult to eat your advice.

Ilovewinter...my in laws did this to me! Except I did all the legal donkey work for free they weren't happy...cos apparently the legal system moves to slow for them...went straight to a barrister, he did same work as me but charged them 10k for it and took longer cos they'd stopped me in my tracks! Plus I was blamed for their expenditure...i told them point blank well next time you decide to come to me I'll charge you twice as much as that barrister!

OP I bet you also get:

Oh you're a lawyer. Can you advise me on my (pick any/all that apply):

Divorce
House purchase
Immigration issue
Boundary dispute
Driving offence
Murder charge

Well I'm an insurance lawyer. So no.

"But you're a lawyer!!! You must know!!!"

Fucks sake! You wouldn't ask your dentist to perform a lobotomy would you?! And anyway you wouldn't listen so why even bother?

YANBU, it's dementing.

An old businessman gave me this wise quote many years ago, I have found with experience he is spot on.

O yes ilovewinter. I'm retraining within an accountancy field...ive spent the last 3yrs going through loads of exams at a phenomenal cost but when I left uni with my law degree I initially wanted to continue on to complete a masters in forensic accounting, wasn't to be...had to start earning as quick as I could so put my life on hold. Spent yrs doing a job I liked and although I loved doing my best for ppl...the legal profession is a 24/7 job that takes its toll and yes ppl used to ask for every legal ailment solution! Christ I'm glad I'm not a doctor! So when ppl found out I was retraining everyone all of a sudden decided i may be wanting to willingly take on their business/personal accounts for free...plus I get all those questions now put into financial demands. Should have become a botanist just like the little 9yr old me used to dream of! Nobody would have asked me sod all then!
