they represent the United kingdom as people from northern Ireland compete for team gb (and yes i know isle of man and channel islands do aswell) so the term uk would not accurately describe our team but it would be more correct than team GB

I agree that Team UK would be more accurate but Team GB sounds better as the "eee" sound is repeated in each syllable. Team UK just sounds clumsy.

Not hard to comprehend why when people think the British Isles, UK and Great Britain are synonyms.

What’s the difference between Great Britain and United Kingdom please?

I’ve just looked it up and answered my own question.

Think you are right, should be Team UK

WE ARE NOT PART OF THE BRITISH ISLES.

It should be Team GB and those from the six counties should be representing Ireland.

Report
bluepears · 19/02/2018 22:32

great Britain is England Scotland and wales
the united kingdom is ' United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland,' it is a sovereign country and is northern Ireland England wales Scotland
the channel islands and ilse of man are not part of either but do compete for team gb at the Olympics these are ' Crown dependencies' these are not sovereign states

some but not all British Overseas Territories also compete for team gb Falklands and Gibraltar do but Bermuda does not

UK passports say United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, so GB means England/Scotland/Wales.

Pretty disrespectful to the approx 50% of the NI population who regard themselves as British. Hmm

It is Team GB and has been since 1999. Why whinge about it now.

@livlemler But it's been established on this thread that Britain is the island that consists of England, Scotland and Wales. So those 50% from the 2/3 of Ulster who claim to be British aren't as they aren't from Britain.

If they want to self identify as British, then let them. But they're as British as Lily Madigan is a woman

Report
bluepears · 19/02/2018 23:48

nope they would fit the dictionary definition of British 'relating to Great Britain or the United Kingdom, or to its people or language'.
and also irish people are part the the British isles the same way people from Norway are from Scandinavian.

Well I’m from the CI which are neither the UK or Great Britain but I am British, my passport says so anyway.

OK it should be Great Britain and Northern Ireland
and Akrotiri and Dhekelia
Anguilla
Bermuda
British Antarctic Territory
British Indian Ocean Territory
British Virgin Islands
Cayman Islands
Falkland Islands
Montserrat
Pitcairn, Henderson, Ducie and Oeno Islands
Saint Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha,
South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands
Turks and Caicos Islands
Is any commentator going to get that in during the 100 mtrs
