It really is time that this nasty practice is stopped.

Yes I agree its a huge step forward

It's integral to the Jewish and Muslim faiths and goes back millennia. Banning it to fit 21st century sensibilities is wrong on so many levels I don't know where to start.

Why do Jews and Muslims do It? What is it to represent?

I disagree blue. It's unnecessary and can lead to all kinds of issues. If adult men feel their god needs them to hack bits of their penis off fine, off they go but it should be banned for children.

You're perfectly entitled to disagree with me - obviously. I have devout Jewish friends and if this were to become an issue here they'd have to leave the country. It amounts to religious persecution.

Properly don't give a fuck. Mutilating small boys for religious reasons is insane and should be outlawed.

Mutilating your child's genitalia because it's been done for ýears, previously ...is not a good enough reason to keep doing it. This makes me sick and I have 4 boys completely intact as the day they were born.

Nobody should be allowed to get parts of their child cut off. The decision to chop parts of yourself off can be made as an adult but you don't do it to a defenceless child.

Report
Bluelady · 19/02/2018 16:42

It isn't tradition. It's an intrinsic part of those faiths. Surely respect for other people's religious beliefs should be part of any civilised society.

I couldn't agree more!!!

I suspect miltons 'off they fuck then' towards jews and muslims encapsulates the real reasons behind this 'debate'

So bluelady, do you think that Italy should still be crucifying and stoning people because the romans did it?

Do you think that FGM is ok because lots of African and ME countries do it?

Do you think that catholic women should be denied contraception?

Do you think that it's right that a Muslim woman's testimony is worth only half that of a man's, or that if she is sentenced to death by stoning she should be buried up to the neck, whilst a man is only buried up to the waist, therefore greatly increasing his prospects of escape compared to hers?

Etc etc etc. It's 2018. It's time we stopped allowing scriptures from thousands of years ago dictate what is acceptable. Any devout man can go and have it done when he's old enough to choose. This is a tiny step, but it is a step.

In practiCal terms I think this’d just see the practice driven underground in religious communities, to the detriment of the boys concerned. (Disclaimer: Red Sea pedestrian)

Good for Iceland, FGM is illegal so boys should have the same protection.

Has this particular poster given you any reason to suspect that they are a religious bigot?

I respect other people's religious beliefs, however I respect a child's right not to have bits chopped off of them more!

Report
Youshallnotpass · 19/02/2018 16:46

I think the 'off they fuck then' is to the very specific Jews and Muslims who would have an issue with not being able to mutilate their sons. Not to all Jews and Muslims (clearly).

You're very wrong. I eat halal meat, couldn't care less about what adults believe and do with their own bodies. Don't care if someone takes a huff cos they can't cut bits off their healthy child either.

Report
CardinalSin · 19/02/2018 16:46

I respect other people - their beliefs have to show them selves to be worthy of respect though. And chopping healthy bits off unconsenting babies genitals, of either gender, is not a belief I consider worth respecting...

Agreed, we'd have to have laws in place punishing for taking children abroad to do so.

GummyGoddess · 19/02/2018 16:50

Tradition is never a reason to continue with a practice. It's barbaric.
