Hi all,

Am posting here for traffic as 5 year old DS has developed a strange rash on his hips.

He has had a bit of a cold and a slightly raised temperature and has been tired for the past couple of days so I'm thinking a viral rash. It's not itchy and isn't bothering him but it's come up really quickly this evening.

He's asleep in bed now but I keep going and checking on him to see if it's spread any more....this is very much for my peace of mind!!!

Any idea what sort of rash this is??

Are you asking because you are thinking meningitis by any chance? It could be something really non-serious like some blotchy temperature related rash, allergy or a simple viral/bacterial infection but its impossible to tell without seeing the child and assessing them and all their symptoms. Phone NHS24 (or your areas equivalent) for some advice (I’m sure they say if the rash doesn’t fade when you press a glass to it?) better to put your mind at rest than sit stressing and worrying.

Just found out all 3 are the same thing!!! And it's not that....

It's not meningitis as it's more blotchy and not pin pricks and his temperature has been fine all day. The only thing he is complaining of is feeling tired.

Looks like it could be hives-an allergy to something-any new soaps or fabric conditioner or similar?

Scarlet fever.

Looks like an allergy (I'm my totally non medically educated opinion)

Looks like a rash my son had 2 weeks ago and he had staphylococcus pneumonia. It completely covered his whole body though

Hmm. Looks as if it might be ringworm to me.

Have just checked and it's now spread downs his legs to his knees.

He's asleep but is scratching it. I've looked at scarlet fever and don't think it's that.....why do these things always happen at night and weekends!!!

Looks like ringworm to me. Have you got any red canesten to put on it.

GP - looks like urticaria, especially if scratching it and spreading. Do you have any piriton? I'd wake him up, check doesn't have any face/tongue swelling or breathing problem, give some piriton and recheck in an hour. Any breathing problem 999. Any doubt 111.

We do have Piriton but he won't take it!!!

He seems fine and breathing ok, the rash is purely on his hips and thighs.

My DH thinks I'm mad as I keep running up and down stairs checking on him!

Shingles? I bizarrely had it as a young child. Itched like buggery.

Not shingles, that has little blistery things-agree, it definitely itches like mad Sad

The rash on his legs seems to be calming down but noticed it on his arm now. It's seems to be reacting to the heat as it's worse on the side he's lying on.

He's still asleep and seems fine

Perhaps guttate psoriasis? Sometimes can develop following a Strep infection.

Ringworm.

It does look a bit like ringworm.

Although I have been treated for that before and it was actually a granuloma annulare I think.
I ended up seeing a dermatologist for that diagnosis as GPS were well & truly stuck.

Basically a trip to OOHs is probably warranted if it’s no better tomorrow

Have just checked again and it's totally gone from one leg now...I think it's either a viral rash or a heat rash.

I've looked at every other type mentioned and it doesn't seem to fit.

Big thanks to everyone who responded. I've learnt a lot about rashes tonight x

Not sure what it may be, but it is definitely not ringworm!

I agree with the GP who said urticaria (hives).

Some children get them as part of a virus. My daughter frequently reacts this way. First time I saw it, I thought it was ringworm - it was in clear rings under her armpits. By the end of the day she was covered in circles and blotches. But the thing was, they moved around.

Nursery didn't believe me when I said it was hives so I took her to the GP who confirmed it was.

You must take any rash seriously but have a look at different urticaria reactions and see what you think.
