Yes please and have instead of of. I always feel mean when reading something where someone is in a bad situation and I am focusing on the grammar.

SilverySurfer Sat 17-Feb-18 10:01:38

Totally agree. God knows why people do this - it's really irritating.

Greenteandchives Sat 17-Feb-18 10:02:18

And the plural of bus is not busses. It is buses.

I’ve never seen ect. Maybe it’s a typo?

Dolphincrossing Sat 17-Feb-18 10:03:59

And etc etc is WRONG.

PurpleDaisies Sat 17-Feb-18 10:04:28

It’s clearly a typo.

WillowWept Sat 17-Feb-18 10:04:56

I've not seen it - presumably a typo?

lurkingnotlurking Sat 17-Feb-18 10:05:15

fekko I've seen it several times today already... (slow weekend start over here)

Fekko Sat 17-Feb-18 10:07:21

My autocorrect can’t spell. And it swears an awful lot!

IamtheDevilsAvocado Sat 17-Feb-18 10:07:51

Personally I don't 'care' about mistakes...

BUT... People who continually write 'could of' instead of 'could have' , and get their, there, and they're doesn't give a good overall impression generally...

It really, really slows up my comprehension of what you've written... So much so, that I often cba to read to end of the message. ..

If you have problems with spelling /dyslexia please get someone to check important stuff like your job applications before you send it....

Skiiltan Sat 17-Feb-18 10:07:54

It gets even worse when the people who write "ect" actually say "ec cetera".

CluedoAddict Sat 17-Feb-18 10:11:23

Yes and payed keeps cropping up it's paid!

maras2 Sat 17-Feb-18 10:11:48

Sick to death with spelling and grammar police correcting adult's use of etymology.
It's not clever, it's not nice and there's a special place where you can all wallow in smugness ------------------------------->---------------------------------------->

FissionChips Sat 17-Feb-18 10:12:02

“Brought” instead of “bought” is the one that annoys me, they are two completely different words!

I have crap spelling and grammar though, so wouldn’t be so cheeky as to comment on it.

LittleMe03 Sat 17-Feb-18 10:13:14

If it's understandable does it really matter that much? confused

I don't mind typos or spelling mistakes, it's when you have to read the post 2/3 times to make sense of it is when I quickly decide I cba

cardibach Sat 17-Feb-18 10:15:55

Why would people be smug about getting basic grammar right, maras? It’s not pedantry to expect that. It’s pedantry when it’s something a bit more obscure, I’d say. I understand some people have writing difficulties, I’m a teacher. I also know that the vast majority of those become accurate with basic grammar and everyday spelling while in school.

cardibach Sat 17-Feb-18 10:17:24

LittleMe it’s not always understandable though - at least not at first glance. I have to re-read if people get their/there/they’re or it’s/its or too/to/two incorrect as it changes the meaning.

I don't think YABU, but in a recent thread it turns out expecting to see correct spelling and grammar makes you a weapons grade elitist wanker. So let's just embrace the uneducated, and those who have been taught but don't care.

Also expect to see this thread moved to pendants corner.

PurpleDaisies Sat 17-Feb-18 10:24:32

So let's just embrace the uneducated, and those who have been taught but don't care.

Come off it. People typing quickly on their phones aren’t uneducated. Autocorrect often does strange things. Typos happen.

Dixiestampsagain Sat 17-Feb-18 10:28:39

YANBU. I also agree with pp about other words...and I don’t care if it does make me a pedant. I love it when people blame autocorrect!

SandyDenny Sat 17-Feb-18 10:30:54

I can't believe posters who say they haven't seen this, it's endemic on all social media.

I think we probably have to blame schools for not teaching it properly but YANBU, I hate to see it too.

It's not a typo or autocorrect, people genuinely think it's correct.

This is the only social media I use (not including work but that’s technical stuff anyway).
