AIBU?

To want solar control windows?

We're refurbishing a conservatory we inherited when we bought the house. Can't afford to knock it down and replace with an extension, so we're trying to make do as best we can, as we need the space. We're replacing the roof with a solid one. Then rebuilding the frames and getting new windows.

It's south facing, with windows on both the east and west side (so all day sun). It currently gets ridiculously hot when it's sunny. Hopefully a solid roof will help hugely, but I'm still worried about the windows.

You can get special tinted glass that reduces solar gain by as much as 78% (we've been recommended Planitherm Four Seasons, for anyone interested). However, it looks quite grey. It's also very reflective.

DH is not keen. He thinks it'll look weird and it's expensive. AIBU to want it? Does anyone have experience of this glass or something similar?

Just for reference, I really hate being too hot - it makes me miserable!

Wouldn’t you be better off getting air con? V cheap to run now a days.

Planning to get Aircon too! Good to know it's cheap to run.

Yes, we have it. Good roof made an amazing difference. Some good blinds will help too.
Save the money you would have spent on glass for an extension/rebuild when you’ve saved a bit more. A friend has it and it does looks very shiny!

Hi Catalarge, I have a few questions for you if that's ok!

What kind of roof do you have? And when you say you have it, do you mean aircon? If so, what kind and would you recommend it?

So your friend has solar controlled windows. Do they look naff then? I don't want to end up with something ugly!
