AIBU?

to think that making American pancakes today is wrong?

Disclaimer: I am a Brit who grew up in the UK with an American father. We had American pancakes with bacon and maple syrup most weekends, long before that became a 'thing'. And long, long before it became a hipster thing.

I like them. They are ok. But they aren't the be all and end all. Even for a child. And the one day of the whole fucking year, when I could have proper, English, crepe-like (iyswim) pancakes was on Shrove Tuesday. I loved them, still love them, think they are fab.

And yet, my social media is awash with pictures of stacks of American pancakes (which are only really eaten like that in cartoons) covered in maple syrup. Yummy, but why today of fucking all days.

Not only are people doing it wrong but they seem to think there is something, edgy, clever and almost cosmopolitan from making the wrong pancakes today. Why do people do this?

I agree! We were promised pancakes at work today and got ready made American ones. I was gutted. Can’t wait for a proper pancake tonight!

Maybe they didn't know it'd upset you.

Of course, people can make their pancakes anyway they want, but I'm with you from a traditional standpoint. People have been tossing in this country for centuries. Can you even toss a little one?

However, DH and I both agree, no Christmas pudding next year, we hate it, it's caramel roulade for us, which we will enjoy.

Oswin the problem with 'just calling them pancakes' is you accept an invite to go round to someone's house for Shrove Tuesday as a child/tweenager, only to face the bitter disappointment of big, fat American pancakes that your hosts have made very clear they expect high praise for.

I know now to always differentiate.

My dh is off today and he suggested doing american style pancakes at lunchtime...What the actual fuck?! Pancakes on pancake day are crepes and eaten at teatime!

Scotch pancakes are superior anyway.

Stacks of American pancakes are fab and served that way in most diners or places offering brunch.
They also take more measuring so I don't do them so often, especially as my kids prefer either English pancakes or French toast.

Americans celebrate Shrove Tuesday too, possibly more so (Mardi Gras!). I love my American pancakes and scandalize both sides of my family by having them with Bovril.

I'm in Scotland. It's pan scones or drop scones here aka American style thick fluffy pancakes. I don't make crepes often now I'm no longer in England as is tradition there. To be fair, I wouldn't be moaning about the loss of an English tradition of making FRENCH crepes though?

I had no idea American pancakes were ever a hipster thing? We eat them on shrove Tuesday because I don't like the traditional flat pancakes as I can't stand the eggy texture of them. Sorry if that upsets you OP Grin

YABU. Surely this is not the day to discriminate?! We had scotch pancakes for breakfast but we’re havin crêpes for pudding after dinner later. Why limit yourself? Grin

I hate crepes they are always disappointing. Big fat fluffy American style pancakes made with sugar, buttermilk and baking powder served with Canadian maple syrup is basically heaven on a plate!

Yabu I don't like and have never liked those crappy thin crepe things, as a child I was never keen on Shrove Tuesday for this reason - always a disappointment! I used to dream of having real pancakes but my mum was quite keen on crepes. Now I'm an adult it's thick fluffy proper pancakes with lashings of maple syrup and berries and my kids bloody love it Grin enjoy your crepes anyway!

Pretty much everything about the way pancake day is celebrated is wrong.

Why are the shops full of brand new stuff to buy for pancake day when the whole fucking point of the day is to use up the luxuries that you already have in before giving them up for lent?

That annoys me far more than whether people have crepes or fluffy pancakes.

I'm sorry OP. I feel bad that we had fluffy (yoghurt) pancakes with bacon and maple syrup this morning but would like to reassure you the real thing will be served this afternoon. It was my way of justifying two lots of pancakes in one day. Sorry!

What about Scottish pancakes? Or do we have to have the English/French version

SweetMoon · 13/02/2018 11:31

YANBU, it has to be crepe pancakes today! In fact at anytime pancakes are mentioned. Those fluffy american things are just, well, crap.

Crepe over crap anyday!

Since it’s to use up your stuff before lent starts tomorrow I can’t issue with having either.
