AIBU?

To declare dried fruit as one of the most disgusting things in existence?

Notable exceptions being dried bananas and dried apples, as they taste like sweets. And dried tomatoes because they are only honorary fruit.

Top offenders being dried apricots and the mysterious brown lump that made it into my granola this morning that was overly sweet and had the texture of gritty playdoh.

Who decided that leaving something out for so long that it shrivelled up into a twisted carcass of itself was somehow an improvement? And why the fuck do they keep hiding them in perfectly good breakfast cereals??

I’m not a dried fruit fan generally. Although dried barberries are nice in Persian style stews. Similarly dried apricots are nice in tagine.

I wouldn’t choose to just eat dried fruit though.

Love rasins, kids love dried cranberries and apricots. DH likes dried figs.
I used to eat lots of dried apples and pears. Dates out here are ok.
So, yes, yabu. There are nice bits, and they are good emergency lunch box top ups.

Gosh, at last, someone who recognises that raisins and sultanas are dead fruits which should be thrown away instead of being added to stuff on purpose!

I don't like fungus in my food either. Actually, to be fair, I don't mind mushroom soup as long as the bits are chopped very finely, but in general it just wrecks a stew.

YADNBU, they’re horrible.

Although I would like to know where unimaginative bought barberries as I couldn’t find them anywhere when I made a Persian stew so had to leave them out! Not that I’d have eaten them personally, obviously.

I find the best way to deal with dried fruit is to soak it in something alcoholic and add to cake.

I can give my DC dried fruit and they think they are getting sweets, theres a little health store near us where you get pretty much a dried fruit pic and mix, so although I couldnt stomach most of it I do think dried fruit is an incredible invention.

You got a fig OP (lucky). You are also entirely unreasonable (stuffs handful of raisins).

Why people go mad on Christmas cake, mince pies Christmas pudding I'll never know - horrible.

Maybe in the 15th century a peasant was orgasmic if they had a currant, but there's so much nicer stuff to eat now.

YABVVU dried fruit is delicious. That's why it's a luxury and we have fruitcake for special occasions.

Yanbu at all. It’s awful stuff, why dry out perfectly nice fruit. Hate all the Christmas pudding stuff.

When I met my Fil for the first time he cooked me his speciality of pork with a prune sauce which I felt I should politely eat. It was not pleasant

@PenCreed barberries can be purchased from waitrose, or from a shop like Persepolis (which is amazing to visit if you are ever near by!)

Dried fruit is delish, but really quite bad for you given the sticky and sugar filled nature.

Love dried mango as a snack.

Waitrose do sell dried barberries, but in tiny pots. I bought them on amazon instead.

I thought they were going to be disgusting and that I’d just eat round them. But turns out they’re nice in stew.

I do not see it as a luxury. Raisins (bleurgh) are standard toddler fodder, for example.

And fruitcake is an abomination that ruins special occasions. Even worse when combined with marzipan.

YABU. But don't change! The fewer people get to share the Christmas cake, the better.

Thanks for the barberries tips - our nearest Waitrose didn’t have them! But I can get to Persepolis before I try that stew again Smile

Are you fucking shitting me or what?

I got an enormous bag of dried figs from Costco and cannot stop eating them. They are divine.

YABU.

I remember the days when people would ruin perfectly good rice or curry by adding sultanas.

Dried fruit is delish, but really quite bad for you given the sticky and sugar filled nature. Dried fruit is just fruit with the water taken out. So nutritionally the same as fruit. There's the same amount of sugar in a grape as in a sultana.

Generally yes it’s vile. Apricots are nice though, but terribly wind inducing!! 💨 why do raisins and sultanas need to be added to perfectly good food stuffs?? I’m always disappointed when I buy a cake/cereal/curry and spend huge chunks of time picking them out.

I read that as fried fruit...that would be vile I imagine...dried fruit on the other hand is fine in my opinion.
