AIBU?

To feel annoyed when

DP keeps leaving the gas hobs on on the cooker. Just found one on again under a pan of mashed potato I say "You must stop leaving the hobs on" He replies "I'm sorry, context switching is hard" in slightly sarcastic tone.

AIBU to think he's talking s* and should just turn the damn gas off?

I hope you have house insurance, he is a liability.

He means he's so preoccupied with Important Man Things such as economics or operating systems that he can't possibly be expected to remember mundane female things like cookers or tumble dryer which need emptying.

It's dickhead behaviour.

What the fuck is context switching, is he really trying to tell you he's so stupid his mind can only handle one thing at a time. Seriously. Like serving his dinner up is all he can think of, so he can't handle the thought of switching rhe hob off too?

I don't think he is. I think he's saying it was as much as he could mentally handle to put the mash on his plate. He couldn't also put the hob off. Becayse well, it would appear thats what the initial context is.

Let something catch fire (I recommend leaving a tea towel close to the hob one day). I guarantee it will turn him into a paranoid hob watcher who will lecture you every time you boil peas.

Voice of experience.

My DP works from home and is infact a web developer. So the context of this was that I'd cooked the potatoes and then given him the option to mash them, which he likes to do as his mash is better than mine (true story, no hard feelings!) So he comes from his office to mash the spuds and then heads back to the office once they're done but as he's leaving I notice that he's left the the lit hob on under the pan. So I call "You have to stop leaving the hobs on" and then he gave me the context switching answer. I also thought it was a dickish thing to say....it's nice to know what other people think too :)

Well then its your fault. Ypu cook the potatoes, turn off the hob and then mash.

In context it does sound possible that he didn't realise the gas was on and that in fact OP left the hob on Shock

Context switching is totally a thing. But this isn't it.

I had cooked the potatoes, drained them, turned the hob off and put them back in the pan ready for him. Part of his recipe for amazing mash is to put them back over the heat once mashed to give them a kind of skin at the bottom. So he did that and then wandered off leaving the hob lit underneath the pan.

In all fairness it was his response that was really annoying...you know rather than just say "sorry, my bad" he has to say something as ridiculous as this and if context switching is what I think it is then there was no switch because turning the hob off again was part of the whole mashing the spuds thing. I don't know, it just really irritated me :(

He means he can't multitask. Tell him it is a bug, not a feature.

Mash with a skin on? There's nothing amazing about that! Hmm

I'm not sure mashing potatoes is a recipe! It sounds like he forgot to turn the gas off then. Maybe forget to do something for him to teach him a lesson?
