AIBU?

Aibu ...a massive argument over a pack of sausages

This is so ridiculous but anyway ...
Last Friday I bought a pack of Richmond sausages and opened them.
Today got home and boyfriend had made a sausage sandwich for him and one for me.
Tasted it and it tasted funny...kind of sour.
Anyway I looked in fridge and they were still in date but had been open a week.
I said I wouldn’t eat that,it tastes awful.
He started shouting expiry date was today etc etc.
I threw mine away.
He started moaning we won’t be buying sausages anymore now...then he ate it.
Should I just have ate it?
If it was in date would it be ok?

I wouldn't, should be used within a few days of opening.

Cooked it was more than likely fine but I wouldn't want to eat manky fridge dried sausage either.

Constantly nagging my dp to cover food properly and throw out clearly manky (usually from not being stored properly) food.

Funnily enough we've just had an argument about sausages here too.

You know when it just has that “taste”
He once ate a pork pie that tasted funny and I’ll with food poisoning for days ...you think he would learn a lesson!

Usually things say on them once opened consume within X days

Report
Oldraver · 10/02/2018 18:03

Well the expiry may of been today but if you open them they will usually only last a day or so.

But who is he to say you wont buy sausages or you should of eaten them..there was no need for him to shout at you

You are nbu!

The use by date is if they are not opened I think. They usually say once opened used in 24hrs or use immediately or whatever.

Saying we won't buy sausages again is just childish.

They were past their use by date, because they had been opened.

You are both Adults and shouldn't be telling each other what to eat. Having said that, is one of you then get sick, you should just get on with it.

Neither of you have the right to dictate what the other one buys, so he can't say that you won't be buying sausages again.

Solution, buy frozen or freeze the sausages.

He has a “never waste any food” mentality which is fine within reason.

YABU for eating Richmond sausages in the first place!!

Report
Talith · 10/02/2018 18:06

Richmond sausages are completely fucking pointless. They don't even taste of sawdust let alone sausage .

They sound as if they were on the turn and who would want to take that risk? The use by dates are a guide and your nose is far more reliable.

If he gets sick I bet he will say it’s your fault. Smile

Richmond sausages always taste off

I never can find a nice sausage.
I used to get Tesco finest sausage but he hates them.

If you ever buy these again ( of course you will, they don't cost more than £2) you can freeze the unused ones in twos. Problem solved.

I don't understand why people buy Richmond sausages. They have the same meat content as Tesco basics with a big price tag.

I would have frozen them 3 days after opening. Can you start to check your fridge everyday to see what needs using?

You can save a fortune, reduce waste and lower the risk of eating something that has went off.

the best befoe date means before the packet has been opened. If theyve been opened, you usually have to use them within 24 or 48 hours. If he wants to get ill then thats his problem, but shit of him to expect you to risk it

I suspect it was the way you said it and that you described the sandwich he made as ‘awful’. I’d be a put out with that reaction though not with then underlying sentiment

He's being an utter dick.

If he gets food poisoning, then leave him to deal with it himself.

Report
Serialweightwatcher · 10/02/2018 18:30

I wouldn't have eaten it either - the use by date is for when they are unopened, but after opening anything, go by a maximum of 3 days for whatever to be used

This really fucks me off about my DP. I don't know how many times we've had a conversation along the lines of

Him: I'll cook this fish/these sausages/etc
Me: the pack's been open for x days; they're probably not any good now.
Him: They're in date until next Thursday.
Me: BUT THAT IS MOOT ONCE THEY'VE BEEN OPENED.
Him:

FFS. It actually SAYS on most things 'Use within x days of opening'!

Thought it was just my boyfriend who was like this!
It’s so annoying and why I do the cooking.

My DH also loves Richmond sausages, they're rank.
Try the Harry and Jim's Cumberland ones (made by the same company who do Porky Whites). £1.69 for 8. They make a great toad in the hole and sausage and veg hot pot. They sell them in ASDA.
