AIBU?

People not eating the bread off sandwiches

At a conference today. Buffet lunch served. Lots of salads and sandwiches. Noticed a colleague take sandwiches, but only ate half the bread, she had six sandwiches but removed the thick top slice of bread and threw it away, just ate the bottom bit of bread and the filling.

AIBU to think this is a waste?

She said she was trying not to eat too much bread, but there were no real other protein options Confused

It seems odd, why wouldn’t you just eat both sides of three sandwiches?

It seems reasonable enough, if the bread: filling ratio was all wrong (as it often is in catering for many people scenarios).

I eat the fillings in meetings. IBS for me but could just be calorie counting or trying to ditch carbs. If they were there anyway at least they ate some of it.

I do this.. and I do it because the bread is sometimes way too thick... taking one side off helps Grin

I am low carb so don't eat bread, Ive been at conferences where I've had to make do with what is on offer including eating just the fillings of sandwiches if that's all there is.

Why are you so worried about your colleagues eating habits and waste. Do you always sit in judgement? Yes she should have forced herself to eat what she didn't want so as not to appear wasteful and so she didn't have to explain herself to you.

I see you counted them too. Did you just sit staring or try to hide your rudeness?

Maybe it was tasteless poor quality bread and too thick. So what?

IBS. All that bloating 🤢

I deconstruct sandwiches too.

Maybe the filling was all stuck to the bottom slice.

Maybe she's low carbing, for health, diet or diabetic reasons.

Maybe it's her lunch not yours!!!

When I go out and really want a burger I only eat half the bun (the half that hasn’t been made soggy by tomato!) but i do it because I don’t want to overdose on carbs rather than the sogginess

I’m veggie and I don’t eat bread (or carbs). Work buffers are a fucking nightmare.

I’d have scraped egg mayo out of the middle and ditched both bread bits!

Meh! I do that sometimes, no point filling up on the sort of cheapo bread usually found at buffets. I'm surprised you cared enough to ask her about it noticed, tbh.

I also leave quiche crusts, lick the flavouring off crisps and just have a sniff of anything sweet.

That really bugs me. Just bloody eat what's there or bring your own food and eat that. Seeing people pick apart sandwiches is really unappealing. How has that become normal?

I understand why she did that. Sometimes when there is a limited choice of food you have to do some reconstruction in order to achieve a meal.

Sandwiches have very little content, so you would need quite a few in order to obtain a couple of slices of ham or an ounce or two of cheese.

Bread makes me really bloated (and windy!), so when there aren't other choices I'd do this - better then farting all afternoon Grin

I mean who cares though,, what does the op think they will do with the stale left over sandwiches, fly them to africa? how is it more wasteful if she throws it out than shits it out?

and to sit counting how many she had, just the sheer thought of someone sitting staring at you and counting up what you eat at. lunch gives me the shudders.

I'd have done the same or just eaten a small portion and gotten a more nutritious meal I wanted later.

It was a one off type situation, probably not something they do every day. It's not like she made the buffet herself and then ditched the bread. What can you do in a situation like that? Stuff yourself silly with bread you don't actually want to eat to keep your nosey colleague happy?

Sounds like you don't respect your body enough op. Some people do and that's okay.

Btw licking crisps and sniffing desserts regularly is just ridiculous and not on par with this situation.

Just bloody eat what's there or bring your own food and eat that.

Why? Because you say so? Well, you and my mother.

I don't eat bread. Therefore if I'm somewhere where the only choice is sandwiches, I ditch the bread and eat the filling.

I've never considered before the angst I may be causing others by doing so Grin

I know Bluntness

You actually counted what they ate op? Just weird. Then started a thread about it online....

Someone has issues but I don't think it's your colleague.

Surely it's just really bad manners to pick at food like that. In the old days you'd pretend to delicately nibble at anything you didn't like and discreetly leave it. Now it's fine to pile up a load of buttery triangles of bread while you try to spoon globs of egg mayonnaise down your throat.

I do that when they have put butter on both slices of bread. I love butter but personally only butter one side in a sandwich or it is too much.

Sandwich is 💩

I do exactly the same, with burgers too. Just too much crap bread, I'd eat a decent baguette etc but cheap bread is awful. That is why I'd rather have a salad/pasta salad/wrap. But if the only option is sandwiches then you just make the best of it.
