To think this is madness

Yesterday on my commute I needed to buy a phone charger, knew my phone wouldn't last. I was in a hurry and dashed into the ee store, payment card in hand wanting to grab one and go. There were two, a ten pound one and a £26 one. I wanted the cheaper one. Then I was told it came with a free phone (!!!). I said fine but I didn't have much time at all and would rather just have the charger. He ambled off to consult with a colleague and then came back t tell me my only option was the £26 charger
Utter madness.

What?

HollyBayTree Fri 09-Feb-18 11:18:06

Innit tho ?

StealthPolarBear Fri 09-Feb-18 11:19:18

Sorry is my ranting incomprehensible? grin
I didn't want the free phone the charger came with. I therefore could not just buy the charger.

Doesn't make sense though? Why wouldn't yet let you?

Dancingfairy Fri 09-Feb-18 11:20:34

They*

PutTheBunnyBackInTheBox Fri 09-Feb-18 11:20:36

Bastards.

icelolly99 Fri 09-Feb-18 11:20:39

So £10 one means you must have free phone but £26 one doesn't and they wouldn't let you have cheaper one without phone? Yep, bit weird!

StealthPolarBear Fri 09-Feb-18 11:21:21

I have no idea. I had to fil out the forms in triplicate for the free phone I didnt want in order to buy a ten pounds charger I did want.

StealthPolarBear Fri 09-Feb-18 11:21:40

And I had no time at all!

StealthPolarBear Fri 09-Feb-18 11:25:50

Annoyingly I did have time on the way home but felt it would be admitting defeat smile

HeadBasher2018 Fri 09-Feb-18 11:25:55

Maybe the cheap charger came with a free phone AND a mandatory contract?

Tarraleaha Fri 09-Feb-18 11:26:17

if you had to fill in so many forms, are you sure you didn't sign for a 2 years contract to get your "free" phone?

StealthPolarBear Fri 09-Feb-18 11:27:17

Possibly. I didn't ask for details when I discovered I wasn't able to just tap my card and dash out.

StealthPolarBear Fri 09-Feb-18 11:28:08

Sorry to be clear I didn't do it. I walked out at the pouty where they said the only charger they could sell me without a free phone was £26

Wellfuckmeinbothears Fri 09-Feb-18 11:31:46

That is madness!

StealthPolarBear Fri 09-Feb-18 11:33:01

Glad it's not just me

AnnieAnoniMouse Fri 09-Feb-18 11:44:18

Look at it the other way, they are trying to tie you into a contact which has a free handset, but you have to buy the charger for £10. It makes sense, but they shouldn’t have them on general display.

StealthPolarBear Fri 09-Feb-18 11:46:29

Yes. In that case the only charger they sold was £26. So I could look at it like that.

spiderlight Fri 09-Feb-18 11:48:24

Bonkers!

StealthPolarBear Fri 09-Feb-18 12:29:34

Both chargers were hanging on a little rack thing BTW. Both supposedly for sale in tbe normal way.

Leiaorganashair Fri 09-Feb-18 12:40:05

It sounds like it was a promotion deal with the phone and the promotion wasn't valid without buying the two together. Annoying but not the shop assistant's fault.

StealthPolarBear Fri 09-Feb-18 12:41:16

But the charger was just hanging on a rack with the £10 price label at the end. Very frustrating
