AIBU?

Aibu to wonder why people need to make horrible jokes at the expense of others?

My 15 year old cousin went missing 2 weeks ago (be aware she's now been found!) however she had been missing for almost 7 days. As she is challenging behaviourwise despite her being immediately reported we didn't start appealing on social media and such until she'd been gone for 2 days. This is because In the past she was often home by then.
Over the next 4.5 days she was missing the post was shared quite widely on Facebook and twitter. It also made it onto a "cityname spotted" page.

People as usual commented
"Shared at XArea" or "shared at xtown nearby". However people made some pretty nasty comments I won't repeat all of them but here are two.

"Shared - local morgue" Angry
"Found safely on the end of my c*ck" Angry what horrible comments to make about the child! To be fair they and other nasty commenters were pulled up on it and most comments were removed. But Aibu to think there's a time and a place for nasty jokes (among appropriate friends who know not to take you seriously) and that anybody who's made these comments about a child needs looking at?

I found this really upsetting. Of course now I'm more relieved she's been found rather than anything else but it still plays on my mind a bit that some people would say these things about a 15yr old (and get a fair few laughs and likes in doing so)

Of course YANBU - that is horrendous, and of course it was very upsetting for you. I am constantly amazed by the things people will say publicly on Facebook, often under their own names. Leaving aside the lack of empathy, it's actually quite frightening that there are adults who are too stupid to imagine that there might be consequences to that sort of thing.

Internet trolls OP. Out to shock and upset people. Awful for you if you're in a worrying situation.

Glad all's well with your cousin.
