AIBU?

To ask if you actually hide threads because their content distresses you as opposed to just not reading it?

There are some posts where I read the OP and the following replies which for a variety of reason then make me feel uncomfortable and actually a little upset at times.

I then have to hide these threads because I don’t want to see the thread title on the page because I don’t want to be reminded that a discussion around the topic is taking place.

For example I had to hide the Jamie Bulger thread the other day and this morning I’ve had to hide the thread about the 8 week old baby being left to cry itself to sleep at night because both topics upset me.

I told my DH that I do it and he thought it was a bit extreme and told me to just not read them but sometimes that isn’t enough for me.

Does anyone else do it??

I don’t. But then threads don’t really distress me to the point I can’t read them.

I do this too, with things I find upsetting and things I just find annoying or dull. Means I see more things that I actually want to read!

No. I don't. They don't distress me to that point.

I just ignore stuff I am not interested in.

No

Sometimes the title is enough, yes.

Sometimes you can predict that the current will be distressing, sometimes that it will be infuriating. I save myself from myself either way.

"AIBU to think is selfish?" - Hide.

"AIBU to put my pram in the disabled space on the bus?" - Hide.

"Was too lenient?" - Hide.

I ignore them. There have been some frightening opinions expressed on the local FB community pages and I've had to leave the groups for a bit. Talking about hanging 10 years old. Awful.

I do it, don’t think it’s weird.

I hide things even if it's not distressing, I might just hide because the title is annoying.

No I don't. I don't get distressed by simply reading something. If I am not interested in it or don't like the content, I ignore the thread.

It also has the effect of weeding out Active so you are more likely to see the threads you actually want to engage with. If Active were an infinitely long list it wouldn't matter if some of it ended up as clutter.

I do but I wish I could without opening it.

I do this very occasionally, when I can’t seem to resist clicking on a thread, even though I don’t really WANT to read the content, as I find it distressing. Usually, I’m able to just not read them.

Sometimes, but more often I use the hide button because I'm a squeamish wimp with an active imagination Grin "is my ingrown toenail infected -pics included"
Yea it's in sporners corner or whatever but when it shows up in active I hide immediately.

I have to hide all the long running threads just because the titles annoy me

Pretty much. I hide threads about messy eating, farts, poos etc because I don't want to know.

Yes. It's rare. But occasionally a title can bother me, be on a subject matter I don't wish to think about so I hide it without reading it so I don't need to see it.i think about three times all in, so rare, but yes, I've done it.

I'd also like to be able to do it without opening it. If a title is triggering it's good to be able to hide it. It's not good you have to open it first.

No, I just don't read the thread.

But there is the occasional poster I'd like to be able to ignore sometimes!

You don't have to open a thread before hiding it, not on the mobile site anyway. Touch the three dots by the thread name in the list & one of the options that comes up is hide.

RadioGaGoo · 08/02/2018 08:17

I also hid the crying baby one.

I do as well. I get very distressed by things and they play on my mind otherwise.

I've been ignoring the James Bulger stuff

I hide threads that will potentially upset me as I know that if I don't, I will at some stage read it to prove that it's not upsetting - and upset myself. I'll then lie awake at 3am getting more and more upset.

JohnnyMcGrathSaysFuckOff · 08/02/2018 08:18

Yes. I have a history of assault and certain threads I find upsetting. Particularly smear test threads as they can get really victim blamey and nasty. I always feel compelled to go on and reason with people and then sometimes really just wish I hadn't.
