AIBU?

To think a month is too long.

I've been in consistent pain for over a month now.
I've constantly had a headache. It varies from a dull ache to a searing blistering headache but it's always there. I can pin point exactly where the pain is coming from because the pain radiates from there. I've seen Dr after Dr and chiropractor and it won't go away. In exhausted and my work is suffering because I can't concentrate. the Dr has put me on various pain killers which don't even touch the pain. Aibu to think a month long head ache is too long. I have a neurology appointment but it's not till march. I don't think I can take another month of this.

What medication are you taking?
Any other symptoms?
Anything that makes it worse - bright light etc?
Anything that makes it better - dark room etc?

I've had naproxen, codeine, cocodomol, amitriptyline and none work. Right now it feels like a hot poker going through the base of my skull on the neck. Not light sensitive or anything like that.

Have you tried syndol, only thing that ever worked on my migraines

No I haven't. Do I need to get that from the Dr? I think the Dr has run out of things to tell me it is. Last time I saw her she said she didn't know so that really filled me with confidence. I'm just so tired of the pain.

Naproxen is a much better idea than the codeine/cocodamol. Codeine can make headache worse.

Has GP assessed you for migraines/eye problems - strabismus/diplopia? Would be worth asking for a trial of a triptan. Would deffo lay off the codeine.

That sounds awful.

I’m not sure but it could be that trying lots of different medications in one month might mean that none of them have been tried for long enough. Amitriptyline for example could need a good few weeks to get used to and build up a good dose of.

Ask for a referral to the pain clinic to talk properly about medication.

Yeah I stopped taking that when it wasn't helping. I've had my eyes tested and everything. Seen a chiropractor. I'm pretty sure it's my neck that's causing the pain because the pain is in my neck. It's like a sharp stabbing pain at the base of my skull and slightly to the side. which then just radiates into a headache.

Have a look for the headache pathway for your NHS trust. They will expect your GP to take you through all the medications before you'll get a referral to a clinic.

I have similar issues with pain in the same area of the spine. An MRI showed nothing at all.

Stop with the chiropractic, it can make it a lot worse. Have a look at osteopathy, it's more holistic in looking at tissue as well as skeleton.

Has anyone done occipital release for you?

Acupuncture helped me for about six months, but it wore off.

Pilates is amazing for my pain, as I suspected lot of mine is posture related.

Do you do a lot of sitting, reading, using your phone or tablets etc?

That sounds aweful.

My mother has horrible migraines and they managed to find a combination of two different kinds of medicationthst kind of works.

And it was ultimately suggested by the pharmacist (and not her doctor...)

She's currently thinking about going to a pain center.

Have you had a full check up?

Have you had your blood pressure checked lately? My dad was having headaches radiating form exactly the same spot for months, they then put him on BP medication after deciding his BP was high enough to warrant it, and the headaches stopped.

I've been in and out of the Dr for a month. Or so. Thinking about it I've had this longer than a month now. I have a feeling the Dr will just tell me the wait until my neurology appointment. I also get shooting pains between my shoulder blades? The chiropractor helped for like an evening then the next day my neck and head pain came back worse.

Blood pressure is normal apparently. First thing they check when I go in there

Can you see a different doctor?

I second seeing an osteopath but please find one recommended if possible.

Chiropractor won’t help long term - get booked in to see a physio at your local private hospital if you can afford it. They’ll do a full diagnostic and then sort you out - it won’t just be exercises, will be a mix of manipulation, ultrasound and behavioural change as well as exercises to sort you out. I had very very similar to you three years ago and even neurology were at a loss but a very good physio sorted me out within 5 visits

Another advocate of Syndol here. They do make me sleepy though so don't take if you need to be awake after. Try a couple before bed the first time. (You can just buy from any pharmacy) xx

I could. I've seen three different drs. One told me it was because I drank too much pepsi, which I cut out completely 4 weeks ago and now drink 3ltrs of water a day, didn't make a difference. One just gave me pain killers. And the most recent one referred me to the chiropractor and the neurologist.

I really can't afford that 😞 I struggled to afford the chiropractor

Watch yourself with naproxen....it caused me to have a huge bleed from my bowel..apparently it needs a medication to protect the stomach at the same time, which I wasn't given.

A month is a bloody miracle for a neurology appointment. I got offered one 4 months away.

Pain in the base of your skull sounds nothing like migraine.

Also Syndol is just co-codamol with caffeine - you've had co-codamol already.

Has your doctor thought about neck problems rather than headache problems given you predominantly have pain in your base of skull and have pains in your shoulders as well? Such as C1/2 instability?

SteX · 08/02/2018 07:41

Yes Chugalug, missed that. You MUST be taking something like Omeprazole with Naproxen, and I'd recommend not taking Naproxen on an empty stomach either.

Don't waste any more money on chiropractor it's not evidence-based. I second physio, if you can get some cash together. Also in my borough there is self referral to NHS physio services - you could push a bit more assertively with your GP to get the whole musculoskeletal picture.

Yeah I second naproxen, and also try travel sickness tablets. Sounds mad, but it can stop the dizzy/woozy/queasy feeling somewhat.

Hopefully nothing is seriously wrong.

If you are really worried, and it's getting unbearable, and you start feeling a lot worse, maybe go to A & E.
