I’ve had one out today. It’s been fairly straightforward but I’ve had the gauze in for half an hour or so. Can I take it out?

Can anyone help. I feel grot bags.

No as far as I know that gauze has to stay in.

You poor thing.
My dentist won't prescribe any painkillers stronger than ibroprofen which had no effect at all when I last had painful dental work. If you are in great pain go to the doctor as they will probably prescribe something to tide you over until the pain stops.

Shudders.

Had mine out 3 months ago. Still not healed yet.

Dry socket, severe infection, nerve pain, etc. It took 3-4 weeks before I felt vaguely normal.

I still have an open hole in my mouth and sensitivity to cold and sweet things.

Id not ice it. It may make it stiff and ache. Heat made mine feel better.

Take the pack out- you should have stopped bleeding by now. Did they give you a spare in case it starts again?
In what way do you feel grotty- are you in pain?

nikki oh Christ! Poor you. Can I ask you if yours is a lower or upper tooth?

I’m a bit worried I have been too blasé about the whole thing!

Mine was absolutely fine and without complications. Didn’t even need ibuprofen. Take the pack out, swish with salt water occasionally and do NOT use a straw for two weeks - can lead to dry socket.

I took mine out about 2hours after surgery. I had both upper wisdom teeth removed, and I think I got very lucky- I had quite bad pain on right side for a few weeks but medication otc worked. Aside from that- and getting food lost in my gummy holes for a few weeks (that was downright weird!) I was fine. I was a local anaesthetic I think- I came home and slept, it was best sleep I’d had in ages!

Don’t start the salt water until tomorrow

Yes I have a spare pack. Ok I’ll take it out.

I feel so wiped out. But not in much pain as such. Just tired I shook with stress and fear the whole time. I have a terrible fear of the dentists. I know lots of people do

Both. I had 2 out. One upper and one lower.

The upper one was ok. The lower one was the troublesome one. It was impacted and they had to cut the gum and slice my tooth in bits to get it out. It was complicated and excruciating.

I really wouldnt ice it. You want to keep blood flow to the area not restrict it.

Google dry socket and follow any advice given to avoid it.

No one told me not to use a straw and I bloody did! Angry Got dry socket.....

There is some evidence that too much rinsing can wash the clot out. Not too often and my dentist said tip your head to the side so the salt water goes onto the area, dont gargle it as it is too harsh.

Is it upper or lower, I had upper wisdom out, took the packing out after a couple of hours. Quite painful in first 24hrs then absolutely fine, healed quite quickly after a bit of tooth shrapnel come out! No problems since, actually was very beneficial for me as it used to get infected lots and then infect my sinuses which was really painful and difficult to get rid of. Heard lower wisdom are more painful to remove but I don't have any as they never erupted.

DO NOT USE HEAT IT SPREADS INFECTION. You can use ice to numb the area if it becomes painful. Not too much swishing with salt water. Wash it gently and let it dribble out. Your aim now is to keep hold of the blood clot. After 5 days you can relax!!!

No straw is key then

Thanks for all your tips, it’s really helpful.

I’ve had a dentist refuser for years and have had a ton of work done the last couple of weeks as my NY resolution was to conquer the fear. Fear has not been conquered but at least I went!

Had mine out it was fine. No pain after definitely not compared to the pain before! No smoking and I believe you should leave off rinsing for a while let clot.

Had an upper one out last year, no problems, back to work (I'm a teacher) within the hour (albeit talking a bit funny, but they were reception, they thought it was fascinating!). Mine healed just fine but echo the no straw thing. Take eating easy for a few days, it's easy to forget once the pain's gone that you're missing a tooth!

Why do straws cause a problem ( just being nosey!)

Report
Hortonlovesahoo · 06/02/2018 20:18

I had an upper and lower out and apart from a bit of discomfort 24hrs after, it healed well and I’ve not had any problems since. It was the best thing I ever had done!

@MesGrindah : it’s to do with the pressure that you put on your mouth when you suck on a straw and also the position of the mouth/jaw when sucking. I was recommended to sip lukewarm things only
