Dd1 is 6.5. I still cut her grapes in half. She wants me to stop. She helped me make her lunch for tomorrow earlier and asked me to leave them whole. I said that she must make sure she eats them properly. I'm not sat here debating cutting them up. Wwyd?

I thought at 6.5 she would be ok really.

Is she normally sensible?

I almost choked on one last week! First time in my life though but it was very unpleasant.

She is very sensible. I'm a worrier. She eats well without cutlery. She is clumsy with a knife and fork, though.

I wouldn't use them in her packed lunch any more. I understand peer pressure and I understand your pov.

To ask when you are supposed to stop cutting up grapeshttp://www.mumsnet.com/Talk/amiibeingunreasonable/1783240-To-ask-when-you-are-supposed-to-stop-cutting-up-grapes

There's an old thread from a few years back with some good advice on this! I would cut them up for as long as you can personally, adults can choke on grapes if they aren't concentrating!!

I always got DS to bite grapes, baby toms and nuts.

Make a deal with her that she bites them in half

I still cut for my 7 year old. I remember hearing on a radio discussion that ideally even adults should still cut them.

I'm very, very old and still cut up grapes if I eat them, after choking on one once.

I still cut my six year olds and I have no plans to stop any time soon. I cut them length ways too, less of a chocking hazard. I was cutting them into four so I'm slightly better than I used to be Grin

I cut my dc's grapes up - they are not sensible though.... Constantly running around with food stored in cheek in manner of hamster, including grapes even though I have been telling them several times a, say since they were 18 months not to run with food in mouth.

I would stop cutting them up personally.

A y3 child got one stuck and turned blue in the school I work in not that long ago
She's 6 if she told you she wanted to drive would you let her?

Report
Rebeccaslicker · 04/02/2018 20:35

I would let her have them at home if she's getting teased - I remember all too well how much teasing I got at that age if my mum gave me egg sandwiches, because one girl hated the smell! I ended up eating them at break to hide them and then having no lunch.

DD is only 2 so I cut them into quarters, lengthways. She then shoves them in.... 4 at a time Hmm

You're supposed to cut grapes into quarters to minimise the risk of choking.

Carry on cutting them.

YANBU, I'm generally too lax parenting wise, except when it comes to grapes. I call them death balls, and go ape if I find OH has let our very careless nearly 5 year old have them whole. Ive read too many of those tragic stories on children choking to death on them. I let my 10 year old have them for school snack whole but even that makes me nervous and I've told her to bite them in half.

I still cut grapes in half for all of us, including adults.

It's a small risk of choking but very serious if it does happen, so l think better safe than sorry.

I would say stop putting grapes in packed lunches and let your dd eat them at home under your supervision if you want to stop cutting them up.

I make a fruit salad for my children so halve gross, chop up a kiwi and sometimes some tinned peaches. Doesn’t seem babyish if there’s more than one fruit!!!!
