MIL Nightmare- family disowned us

Just before Xmas my DD DS and chap went away with MIL FIL BIL SIL and nephew for a fake Xmas. Anyways my 11DS has his moments like any other and he was playing with a toy from a Xmas cracker. MIL told him to put it down as it wasn’t his- he didn’t and then it broke. MIL lost the plot shouting how he has no respect etc. DS left room in tears whilst MIL and sons Dad had a blazing row which was very nasty and aggressive on both sides. MIL eventually stormed upstairs stopping to scream in DS face that it’s all his fault. Everyone else piled upstairs to check on MIL leaving me downstairs with petrified child. BIL comes down later and says MIL reacted like that as he’s annoying (whilst he was in earshot!) We left the next morning and have had no contact with MIL since. I messaged saying I want them both to apologise to DS but MIL denies screaming at him ( everyone else was in kitchen still and didn’t see her! -I did!) and BIL believes her and has now cut off all contact. They even invited DD to my nephews birthday party but not DS as they didn’t want any tension at the party! I am fuming and don’t know what to do. I don’t want a relationship with MIL but would like to with nephew and family but don’t get how this can work.
