to make the DCs walk 10 mins?

You would think I was suggesting that they are being made to walk miles from their reaction...

DD has an after school activity and I insist on walking when I take her (with DS) and bring her home. It’s only 10 mins each way. I only drive if it’s raining.

It is cold out but we have decent coats etc.

I can’t decide if I’m mean for walking. Dh usually drives them as does their nanny but I walk every time.

Is that mean!?

Not mean, my DC (youngest aged 4) walked 30 minutes to pick up the car from the garage after school today...

I don't have a car so we walk everywhere so of course they can walk??

10 minutes walking is good for them. DH and nanny should walk as well.

I can't believe how lazy people are nowadays sometimes.

When it’s absolutely chucking it down, I drive. Which has happened once. Not for drizzle.

I’ve give up getting the nanny to walk them as we are making her redundant soon.

I know I’m not really being mean but a tiny part of me just thinks maybe I am especially as I hate driving generally. So I take any excuse to walk. We also didn’t have have a car growing up and I walked miles as a kid, so I’m not used to using a car very often.

I walk with my kids to and from school (15 mins each way) 6 times a day. They all finish at different times...the youngest walking is 3...

Yanbu - walking is a great form of exercise. How old are your children?

I still don't get why they don't walk in heavy rain.

It's a bad habit to get them into thinking rain automatically = car

Especially in the UK where heavy rain is hardly rare!

My dad had a car when we were growing up but my mum didn't and my dad was out at work all day in his. We managed perfectly well, the 35 minute walk to and from school in every weather imaginable.

A 10 minute walk really shouldn't be an 'issue' for any of you.

Heavy rain - because (and yes it’s lame but I will resolve when I buy DCs new winter coats!) - DD’s head is too big for her hood so it doesn’t keep her head dry. That’s literally the only reason why not

I would walk it.

10 minutes??? Definitely wouldn’t even consider driving
I read a report recently that said the average uk prisoner spends more time outdoors than the average uk child! Keep up the walking 👍

I live where the nearest school isn't easy to walk to - I'm talking muddy fields and pathways. People only walk it in the dry summer weeks and then, not many do, as it takes about an hour. I would LOVE to be able to walk 10 minutes to school.

How old are they? My 4 and 2.5 year olds walk half an hour to preschool 4 days a week (and back).

I don't think a 10 min walk is unreasonable at all. And probably doing the DC the world of good!
Do the DC complain?

We love the 15 minute walks to and from school.
The morning walk is good for DS, as he is going to be mostly indoors once at school. It wakes us both up and I value that bit of time with him.
The return journey gives him an opportunity to use up some energy and to talk about his day.
He often scoots which, again, is good exercise. It also means I have to walk that bit faster, so counts as exercise for me, too.

It surprises me that anyone would ever drive their kids to school when it's a ten minute walk, or even a half hour walk. (Unless they were having to go somewhere else before or after)

I. drive everywhere and I know it's bad but I've got into such a lazy habit, as a child my mum didn't have a car and we walked everywhere.
