Driving licence expired help!

AIBU or will I have to resit my test?

I’m so worried about this, please don’t tell me how stupid I am as I know this already.

I moved house and never thought to inform DVLA so licence had old address on it. My licence expired August 2017 and this has only come to light as I’ve bought a new car and the finance company need to contact DVLA to confirm I have a licence number.

I didn’t get a renewal letter as my address has changed.

Have been reading about the penalties I can face, £1000 fine and having to sit my test again. Shock

I really feel sick at the thought of this. Has anyone been in a similar situation? I’ve sent all the renewal stuff back to them but am fully expected it to be sent back to me again.

I’m so so worried 😟

Are you over 70? Your license doesn't expire until then.

Yes. I moved, and my licence expired. It was a few years before I renewed it. I didn't get a fine. It should be fine, just remember to do it asap!

I let mine expire. No excuses. I just renewed it, they did nothing

The same happened to me. I had moved house and hadn’t gotten around to changing the address.
Was only when I randomly saw Martin Lewis mentioning it on this morning that I checked my license - 18 months out of date!!
Went to the post office and used their service to take picture/fill out forms etc and got my new licence through the post a week or so later. No problems at all, dont worry am sure you will be fine!

It doesn't "expire" until your 70th birthday, it's just got an old address on it.

For those who had expired licences... were you driving not knowing you had an expired licence?

I think the fine is if you get pulled by police while driving with an out of date photo card license? But I may be wrong!

But it has expired, it’s only valid for 10 years.

Bluelady, The photo cards expire as you need a new photo.

Forgiveness, I was driving on an expired licence without knowing. Lucky I noticed when I did... I had an accident the next month!

You need to renew your photocard every 10 years don't you?

Bluelady · 17/01/2018 15:31

Massive apologies. You're all right. I was wrong. Big helping of humble pie ordered.

Yes I did without realising, did it online and it came a couple of days later.

I don't think they send reminders.

Your license to drive expires when you are 70

Photo cards expire in 10 years

Only the photocard has expired, not your actual license :)

Just renew it online. I did mine recently and it came back within a week.

You card has expired

Because they have photos on you need to get a new photo and they issue you a new one, you wouldn’t want a photo from when you could technically be 17 on your card when your 45!

Just send it off and renew the photo

But it has expired, it’s only valid for 10 years.

The photo card expiring is different from your entitlement to drive expiring.

Item 4.b on mine tells me the physical photo card licence expires on a date in 2014.

BUT if I flip it over to the category entitlements table (part 13) I see my entitlements are good until 2043. The day before my seventieth birthday.

ImPhotocard expires in 2024, that should say Smile

TwinklyGiraffe · 17/01/2018 15:49

Ok thanks everyone.

So my entitlement to drives has not expired, just the photocard.

I’m in NI so have to apply to Coleraine.

Have all paperwork sent away, so fingers crossed.

I renewed mine online with my passport details.
If your passport is valid and has your new address on you may be able to do it like that.
You are then issued your new card license and they pull the photo and signature from your passport

I hadn't renewed my licence. This seems to be a new thing. I finally did it and they just sent me a new licence.

I did the same as @LookAtAllTheBullshit they took my details and photo from my passport and I got a new licence within a few days. Mine had expired and had the wrong address, I didn't get a fine.

The DVLA don’t send reminders.

Hidell, the DVLA does send reminders. I just received one 3 days ago.
