fantasmasgoria1 Tue 16-Jan-18 12:48:19

No! If it was in a specialist fetish catalogue maybe but ASOS!!!

Kit1411 Tue 16-Jan-18 12:49:18

Ooo yeah they should also think about their younger audience 17/18/19, not a good name or look.

etap Tue 16-Jan-18 12:53:21

That's awful.

Hippobottymus Tue 16-Jan-18 12:54:27

shockgenuinely shocked that anyone thought that was okay!

Allaboutthatcake Tue 16-Jan-18 12:54:57

Wtf

cantucciniamaretto Tue 16-Jan-18 12:55:59

Offensive to who an why?

TheQueenOfWands Tue 16-Jan-18 12:56:15

£45!!

Meh, it's just a belt. No one has to wear it.

glitterbiscuits Tue 16-Jan-18 12:57:08

Completely agree with you OP. My teens shop there and it’s not an image I would want them to see.

Fishface77 Tue 16-Jan-18 12:58:00

Highly offensive and to those asking to whom it would be offensive, perhaps my friend whose daughter hung her self with a belt might be slightly upset.

ThomasRichard Tue 16-Jan-18 12:59:06

That is shocking. Suicide imagery being used to sell a crappy belt?

Champagneandthestars Tue 16-Jan-18 13:00:11

It's the 90s coming back - I wore a dog collar back in the day (from pets at home, nothing as chic as this!) don't get your knickers in a twist. It's just fashion, innit.

Hoppinggreen Tue 16-Jan-18 13:00:13

I’m usually not much of a pearl clutcher but that’s really horrible

Lotsofplanetshaveanorth Tue 16-Jan-18 13:00:23

Grim

glitterbiscuits Tue 16-Jan-18 13:00:36

Let’s see how long until the Daily Mail spot this. And if they pull ASOS up on this then good!

Champagneandthestars Tue 16-Jan-18 13:01:25

Just spotted it's called Hanger - ouch! I take it back!

Bramble71 Tue 16-Jan-18 13:01:58

I don't know if offensive is the right word, but I do think it's an awful piece of clothing, suggestive and inappropriate.

CheapSausagesAndSpam Tue 16-Jan-18 13:02:37

Hanger???? What the actual fuck??

It's horrendous! I'm getting onto them now!

Even her pose is suspect.

LadyBunnysWig Tue 16-Jan-18 13:02:38

Personally I'm not offended but I appreciate why others are...

spiritofadventure Tue 16-Jan-18 13:03:09

Ffs...Some people are offended by anything!

Helmetbymidnight Tue 16-Jan-18 13:03:23

God that's horrible. Massively inappropriate for a teen clothing company.

MrsTiggyWinkle3 Tue 16-Jan-18 13:03:41

That's disgusting.

Without the name and the word 'Hanger' on her t-shirt, it could have been playing on the choker necklace fashion.

But calling it that is foul, and who would want to buy that??

lolaflores Tue 16-Jan-18 13:04:46

Total fail at an edgy look and I dont think Asos is the place for it. Enough suicide material around the internet for the teens as is.

QuackPorridgeBacon Tue 16-Jan-18 13:04:47

I didn’t think suicide, I totally see it but it wasn’t my first thought. My mind went along the lines of sexual.... blush

MrsTiggyWinkle3 Tue 16-Jan-18 13:05:00

I can't see it on the website. It must have been removed!

ILoveUsernames Tue 16-Jan-18 13:05:38

Horrible I'm not normally a complainer about stuff but this is a bit much

CheapSausagesAndSpam Tue 16-Jan-18 13:07:47

Hanger is an entire range

www.asos.com/au/hanger/hanger-latex-pants/prd/9281139?clr=red&SearchQuery=hanger%20choker&gridcolumn=3&gridrow=6&gridsize=4&pge=1&pgesize=72&totalstyles=360

This is on the AUstralian ASOS

CheapSausagesAndSpam Tue 16-Jan-18 13:09:41

Here's Hangers site

www.hangerinc.co.uk/collections/latex-1/products/plain-bikini-bottom-red

All very fetish inspired

MsHarry Tue 16-Jan-18 13:10:23

YANBU that is not good.

bobstersmum Tue 16-Jan-18 13:11:39

Who would actually wear that anyway?

expatinscotland Tue 16-Jan-18 13:13:15

Fucking awful.

CremeFresh Tue 16-Jan-18 13:13:37

I'm not easily offended but this is awful- the name Hanger . What on earth are they thinking ?

DeleteOrDecay Tue 16-Jan-18 13:14:48

That's awful. The name, the image.

I hope this isn't triggering for anyone.

Notadrill Tue 16-Jan-18 13:15:12

YADNBU

AtlanticWaves Tue 16-Jan-18 13:15:50

My friend hung himself when he was about the age of that model.

Horrible photo

dutysuite Tue 16-Jan-18 13:18:52

Horrible.

alotalotalot Tue 16-Jan-18 13:19:01

I thought sexual rather than suicide but either are not nice

Withhindsight Tue 16-Jan-18 13:20:40

What is the message if it's not - it's cool to hang yourself? Completely wrong as an adult I say F***0ff with your ridiculous adverts, as a curious and impressionable teen I may think it's a good idea to go out like this and risk getting it jammed in a door, yanked by others, the end result is the same, trauma to the neck if you wear it like this- imagine Miranda Hart wearing this instead of the dress in the taxi scene?

Basseting Tue 16-Jan-18 13:22:05

Horrible.
Inappropriate in both a suicide and fetish manner.
It needs taken down imo, and I am normally pretty tolerant.

If it's 'just a belt' then show it around her waist...

ThumbWitchesAbroad Tue 16-Jan-18 13:22:11

Christ almighty, that's bad.
Whether you take it as fetish style clothing, or whether your mind immediately goes to the suicide suggestion, there is nothing good in that image.

ASOS should be ashamed of themselves. Perhaps they were trying to take a leaf out of H&M's notebook by creating an advert of sufficient controversy to get them in the news for days?

YetAnotherSpartacus Tue 16-Jan-18 13:23:06

The model looks about 16, if that sad

RecalibratedMilkshake Tue 16-Jan-18 13:27:52

Message withdrawn at poster's request.

lunar1 Tue 16-Jan-18 13:30:45

That's appalling, I don't take offence easily but they should be ashamed of themselves for this.

MissTeri Tue 16-Jan-18 13:36:19

Lost a friend to suicide last year, they hanged themself, this definitely made me think of that as soon as I saw it without even seeing the name of it. Not cool, not edgy, just disturbing.

Judashascomeintosomemoney Tue 16-Jan-18 13:38:38

Even her pose is suspect
Exactly, I think that’s why it makes me feel it’s inappropriate for a largely teen audience on ASOS. I grew up with Punk so I’ve got no objection to buckles and chains, but this is deliberately designed to make her look submissive and sexualised.

Mycarsmellsoflavender Tue 16-Jan-18 13:40:41

Horrible.

CremeFresh Tue 16-Jan-18 13:46:49

My DD has Asos vouchers , I wish we could change them after seeing this.

practicallyperfectmummy Tue 16-Jan-18 13:55:02

Well done for tweeting then op and getting removed. It's an awful image I was shocked by it.

IrkThePurist Tue 16-Jan-18 13:56:54

Its called Hanger. Well done for flagging it OP.

RatRolyPoly Tue 16-Jan-18 13:57:47

Holy. Shit.

The item of clothing itself is forgivable. In conjunction with the pose it is not.

I can't believe no-one did a double take before it found itself on the internet confused

VladmirsPoutine Tue 16-Jan-18 14:01:57

Are people taking issue with it mainly because of the sexualised aspect of a submissive young woman, or in the context of glamorising suicide i.e. hanging?
I think it's atrocious but don't particularly find it offensive.

demirose87 Tue 16-Jan-18 14:05:59

That's gross.

RatRolyPoly Tue 16-Jan-18 14:09:35

It's the suicide aspect I'm seeing. Why use a pose reminiscent of suicide for an item that not only resembles another item of clothing being used as a means of killing oneself, but is also called a Hangar belt choker? I mean they can't help the brand name or the fact it is indeed a choker, and the blatant resemblance is perhaps somewhat the point of the thing - fashion innit - but why the photo?? And then for it to be placed somewhere specifically aimed at young people, some of whom could potentially be vulnerable... I think that's a pretty reprehensible fail.

DreamyMcDreamy Tue 16-Jan-18 14:10:33

Ugh, that's horrible! I wouldn't have made any connection, but seeing that my first thought was it looks stupid and very dangerous, if it got caught/yanked suddenly....yep, ridiculous and dangerous!

Jaxinthebox Tue 16-Jan-18 14:18:06

FFS my DD shops there and I would not like her to see this or buy this. Sexual and suicide thoughts regarding this when I saw it.

Epic Fail ASOS. angry

Londonlivin Tue 16-Jan-18 14:22:40

You can’t compare this to a dog collar worn in the 80’s. I came on the thread expecting to disagree with the OP, but this is grossly irresponsible of ASOS.

DailyMaileatmyshit Tue 16-Jan-18 14:23:53

I genuinely don't see the issue here. It's fashion.

helenoftroyville Tue 16-Jan-18 14:26:36

Erotic asphyxiation & suicide spring to mind....it's called 'hanger' FFS what are they thinking? angry

bridgetoc Tue 16-Jan-18 14:30:21

YABU......... Resist the urge to be a snowflake, and make an effort to not be offended by everything.

MedicinalGin Tue 16-Jan-18 14:31:24

The word ‘hanger’
The big red belt round the neck
The pose

Each one of these in isolation could be explained away. All three together is completely wrong- I would hate my daughter to see this.

NorbertTheDragon Tue 16-Jan-18 14:33:55

My brother died by hanging himself. I'm not usually bothered by images of it (on tv etc) but that really shocked and upset me. Probably because there's no reason for it - it's not part of programme or a book. It's just to get attention and publicity because I can't believe anyone actually thinks a belt noose is a good look to go out in.

whiskyowl Tue 16-Jan-18 14:39:14

Making a piece of clothing for teens that overtly references suicide by hanging is irresponsible in the extreme. I can't believe their buyers thought this was remotely appropriate. I would be seriously questioning the judgement of whomever included it, to the point of considering their future as an employee.

NerrSnerr Tue 16-Jan-18 14:40:06

Resist the urge to be a snowflake, and make an effort to not be offended by everything.
Some things are offensive though. I’m another who has lost a sibling to hanging. Advertising clothes using suicide is not on.

Blackteadrinker77 Tue 16-Jan-18 14:42:22

The timing as well, to be selling that at a time of year when the suicide rate is higher.

Elendon Tue 16-Jan-18 14:43:30

YANBU!

Suicide statistics show that young people are most at harm and that they are also most at harm from abuse within a relationship at this time.

WingsOnMyBoots Tue 16-Jan-18 14:47:06

Yes, it makes me feel physically sick.

CremeFresh Tue 16-Jan-18 14:52:52

There are lots of things people should not be offended by. This is not one of them.

diddl Tue 16-Jan-18 14:58:22

"Meh, it's just a belt. No one has to wear it."

Why would a belt be modelled around a neck??

SpiderWilliesOnYourFrillys Tue 16-Jan-18 15:04:59

Wow i think there should be some sort of warning before seeing this image tbh, not directed at you OP at all. I can’t believe ASOS have put this up. My life was turned upside down by suicide just like this pictured! What were they thinking sad

Keepingupwiththejonesys Tue 16-Jan-18 15:18:40

45 quid!!!

Elendon Tue 16-Jan-18 15:25:51

Recently there was a post on here about mysterious deaths/people gone missing. I clicked on a link that took me to the suicide of a young person. They used a belt.

It was deemed a site NSFW. I wished I had never clicked on it. This image is really no different.

It's abhorrent.

As is your post @Keepingupwiththejonesys No need to be so dismissive.

BubbaLips Tue 16-Jan-18 15:29:42

this is shocking.

Alpacaandgo Tue 16-Jan-18 15:46:16

The actual item, just crap and not offensive but put together with the name and the image wtaf!!!

I shall be emailing them too.

Personally I can just overlook this but the thought of my teenage girls who shop there seeing this and thinking its fashion just makes me feel sick.

LadyIsabellaWrotham Tue 16-Jan-18 15:56:58

That really is a shocker. Somebody must have directed the model to strike that pose deliberately - who the fuck does that?

As a point of fact though, young people and teens are less at risk of suicide than middle aged people and the very elderly.

mishfish Tue 16-Jan-18 16:00:25

I was ready to tell you that you were being unreasonable but that image is entirely inappropriate.

mishfish Tue 16-Jan-18 16:11:14

www.mirror.co.uk/lifestyle/family/parents-shocked-vile-offensive-womens-11861381.amp?__twitter_impression=true

Lucylululu Tue 16-Jan-18 16:16:23

I'm not offended but its ugly

CremeFresh Tue 16-Jan-18 16:18:24

I've emailed Asos and have had a generic 'sorry you're unhappy' reply

Heatherjayne1972 Tue 16-Jan-18 16:21:07

Not offensive but dangerous
You never put a belt around your neck

Serialweightwatcher Tue 16-Jan-18 16:25:26

I think that's terrible and I do think some companies nowadays do such a thing to get a shocked reaction and a few mentions in the press to get people on their website

cantucciniamaretto Tue 16-Jan-18 16:27:45

Not offensive but dangerous You never put a belt around your neck

It's not for children. if adults want to put belts around their necks they are free to do so.

MrsExpo Tue 16-Jan-18 16:29:45

Is it a belt and a bit of “creative” modelling, of is it meant to be worn round the neck? Either way, I totally agree, utterly grim. WTF were they thinking?

theftbyfinding Tue 16-Jan-18 16:34:50

That is utterly disgusting.

Whywonttheyletmeusemyusername Tue 16-Jan-18 16:36:00

I am another that isn't offended by every thing, like so many others are these days, but this is vile. A family member hung himself, and I have a DC who is self harming. If she saw this, when she was in a bad head space...God knows. So so wrong

PuppyMonkey Tue 16-Jan-18 16:38:23

I'm sure these companies aren't as stupid as they seem to be with horrible stuff like this. They know people will be talking about it and it'll end up on Jeremy Vine and there will be lots of mentions of ASOS. And the curious will go and look at the website. Loads of extra hits, happy days.

diddl Tue 16-Jan-18 16:38:34

It's a choker in a belt style.

It's never going to look other than it does.

I'm surprised anyone would want to sell it as a fashion item.

Iamagreyhoundhearmeroar Tue 16-Jan-18 16:45:49

Bloody awful.

biffyboom Tue 16-Jan-18 16:52:28

That is vile. They know exactly what they were doing with that picture, and who their main target audience is.
Probably done with the thought 'any publicity is good publicity' and will generate free publicity.

BitOutOfPractice Tue 16-Jan-18 16:52:59

That really is grim

MagicWillHappen Tue 16-Jan-18 16:55:19

Disgusting and completely irresponsible for ASOS to advertise that particular product in the way they have.

ThomasRichard Tue 16-Jan-18 16:56:02

Ooo, I’ve been quoted by the Mirror! Line up here > for autographs.

comfortingcanopy Tue 16-Jan-18 16:59:09

That is revolting. I wonder what photographer thought that was appropriate. Needs pulling and the photographer told sod off!

LemonysSnicket Tue 16-Jan-18 17:00:20

Meh ... it’s a stupid product.
I can’t get worked up about it...

LemonysSnicket Tue 16-Jan-18 17:02:57

And I understand people like @Fishface77 would be offended, but not people who wouldn’t want their teens to see it... their friends make far more offensive jokes at school, violent videos are on FB, horrible events are written in the papers.

We had to enact a phone call from a 9/11 victim to their family in my drama class in secondary school ... your kids aren’t ( unless suffering Mh issues etc) unable to handle tough themes.

Clicksandstones Tue 16-Jan-18 17:08:19

A family member committed suicide this way.

I hope you don't mind if I report this as triggering.

Awful.

whiskyowl Tue 16-Jan-18 17:09:15

This is not about handling tough themes. Teens need to be spoken to about self-harm, suicide etc. in a responsible and age-appropriate way. This is emphatically not doing that.

saltandvinegarcrisps1 Tue 16-Jan-18 17:14:55

Lots of free advertising though for the company.

doubleshotespresso Tue 16-Jan-18 17:15:00

Everything about this, the product, cheap but strong suicidal imagery and the unforgivable name upsets me deeply.

And yes very triggering in a way I had hoped not to be ever again.

OP please do share whatever response you receive from ASOS

StylishMummy Tue 16-Jan-18 17:16:31

that's horrific, the suicide and sexual connotations are disgusting. I bet Asos put this on there to generate click bait angry
