AIBU?

To say dating sites don't randomly just appear in email junk boxes?

QueenofmyPrinces · 15/01/2018 13:54

Or do they?

It was my understanding that emails may be sent from dating websites and end up in the Junk Mail section but only if the website has been accessed/viewed at some point?

Junk mail often relates to search history, but often nor.
I often got dating site ads before signing up to any. Now I'm on one (Match) I get ads for Muslim/Christian dating sites - no idea why as I'm not even slightly religious!

I get them all the time despite never using one and offers to increase the size of my non existent penis and use of viagra!

Would it be a strange coincidence though if all the girls that were being put forward as potential matches all come from the same County we live in?

me too and I'm a 56 year old married mum of 2 who is a bit of a prude - so GOD knows how they get there!

Yes, I get them and have never been on a dating site in my life! I have a male name (although I am female) so get a lot of junk mail about brides, sex sites, penis enlargements etc. Some of them are extremely crude. No idea how to stop them though!

It's just a lot of nonsense.

I checked my junk email for the first time in ages recently and it was full of Russian porn links and brides, I have never looked at anything that would produce that. All sorts of tat gets sent out.

I think it depends how strict your email inbox settings are as to whether it goes into junk inbox or not

Not at all strange and not at all strange that they target your county - I get ads targeting my location all the time.

QueenofmyPrinces · 15/01/2018 14:01

I just find it odd that all the girls that they put forward live within a 10 mile radius.

I googled the website but couldn't bring myself to look at it.

I often get emails telling me about singles available in Leeds (where I live...)

I've been married 8 years and have never used a dating site in my life

Report
LadyDeadpool · 15/01/2018 14:02

A lot of the time the emails are specific to where you live as they use information sold to them by other companies.
I get viagra, russian brides and dating sites despite never having been on a dating site or owning a penis.

I get loads of junk targeted location-wise for where i lived years ago.. It can be anything that passes this info on to other sites. Wouldn't worry if that's all it is.

I get loads in my junk too, the last one was for single young Jews. I’m out on all 3 counts. Some programmes (or all) use some sort of algorithm to stream data into regions so it’s not unlikely that you’d that you’d get regional spam. Not sure of the ins and outs though as I’m not techy minded.

You sound suspicious of someone though OP. Why not ask them if it bothers you?

I've just checked my spam folder and I have 4 messages from hot Russian women wanting to meet me, several ads for sexy local girls looking for a date, and an advert for a penis enlargement pump.

All the men I ever have live "nearby".

"32 Year olds in [town's name] want to meet with you"

I've been married for longer than that and have never dated online.

Marketing online is much more clever than you imagine.

You seem certain that something is afoot. If I saw these messages in my dh’s inbox I wouldn’t think anything about it at all. So you must be suspicious in the first place.

I once emailed a friend on gmail telling them that our other friend had got a job at Pilkington Glass and I was inundated with double glazing spam emails.
