To think you can be female and minimalist

I've got a family member that just thinks it's impossible as "women like their things". She's ridiculous right? I can ditch my possessions that I don't use or like

I'm sure you can, yes.

I can't. But that's because I'm me. Not because I'm female.

Well I’m female and minimalist. Hate random ornaments etc. Hate fussy clothes. Like lots of space. But l don’t think it’s because I’m female🤨. It’s more to do with liking space and order. I have a degree in design so maybe it’s something to do with that!

Yep agreed nothing to do with gender.

She just said I can't be minamilist as I like hair straighteners, I'm not sure she understands what it even is..

I would think hair straighteners were perfect for minimalism. No unruly curls or waves, just straight ordered hair!!!

I feel traumatised if my hair goes wavy!

She is ridiculous, she should look at some interior photos looking like show rooms because there's nothing in the house.

Being female has nothing to do with being minimalist or not. It's like saying that all men are messy (bordeline dirty) unless they are gay and then live in pristine homes. Hmm That one is going strong too.

Exactly! I think she thinks it's giving up every single possession, but even if it was don't think gender is even reliant. I think she's trying to justify why she keeps buying stuff even though most of her stuff is in storage

Marie Kondo is a woman

There are plenty of male hoarders out there too. I dont think its gender specific.

There's an interesting doc on Netflix called 'the minimalists'.
Now I think about it there weren't that many women on it. But I think the idea women like 'things' is ridiculous.
I love my physical books so could never have an empty-ish living room but minimalism - in the sense of this new-ish movement- isn't about sacrificing everything you love, and abandoning anything that is just aesthetic it's about moving away from needless, compulsive consumption.
The women featured were followers of the 333 Project (bemorewithless.com/project-333/).
A few of my friends were inspired by the project where you take 33 items of clothing - including shoes, jewellery, hats, etc - and rotate them for 3 months.
In theory it teaches you how little you need.

I was inspired to have a clear out but not sure about trying project 333.

In my head I am minimalist. I have a euro millions win fantasy loft apartment with barely any furniture, a few Rick Owens garments hanging on matching hangers.

My reality with 2 kids, 3 cats, 2 Guinea pigs and DH who's mantra 'No don't throw, that'll come in handy for something else'
