What is the creepiest place you've ever been to?

Was just talking about this with DH earlier. I remember going on a visit to Edgehill as a child and finding it really spooky. We'd been watching videos in school about the Civil War and there was talk of the phantom armies etc, so I think it was a combination of that and how strange it was that all these nice quiet green fields were once a battlefield

The second place was a ruined abbey in Ireland. Lovely sunny day when we visited, but my skin was crawling the whole time we were there and I kept feeling as though there was something peeping at me fron behind the walls

Ooh great thread! Mine was a farmhouse b&b in Ireland. The family who owned it looked like they were from 100 years ago, it was more than their clothes, it was something about them. Anyway in the middle of the night I was woken by this really loud banging on the front door. No one went to answer and the banging increasingly got louder and more aggressive. It stopped after about half an hour. A couple of minutes later I 'felt' something come into my room and move round to my side of the bed and stand in front of me. I was absolutely terrified and was frozen in fear. I daren't open my eyes. I could feel the evil radiating off it, whatever it was. All of a sudden my hands and feet started shaking, I couldn't control them (don't know whether that was just the fear though). Honestly, that was the most terrifying experience of my life. And creepiest.

Mine, and it had a lot to do with my state of mind at the time, is Blackberry Hill Hospital in Bristol. It was built during the Crimean war and half boarded up at the time. It looked like an asylum from a film. I'm lucky dh was with me or I wouldn't have gone in.

Oh I know blackberry hill hospital. That does look quite horror film. I find the bottom deck of the ss Great Britain feels wrong. Hate the feeling down in Steering and below. My kids love it but I make us go through quickly.

Oradour-Sur-Glane, near Limoges, in France.

Scene of a massacre during WW2, and they left the whole town untouched as a memorial to the 600+ killed. Really, really chilling, and terribly sad too.

I visited the Ploetzensee Memorial in Berlin back in the eighties where the nazis executed political prisoners etc.

There is a room with five meathooks in the ceiling where (I think) people were hanged. It was the eeriest room I’ve ever been in and I’m not at all woo.

A hotel in Evesham. It's full of teddy's and stuffed toys - all along the corridors and in the bedrooms. The bar area is full of Knick-knacks and random stuff. Each bedroom is themed and whilst staying I felt a presence in my room twice so asked to change rooms ( I'm so not woo at all) - and then when I moved to the new room the lights started flickering on and off. Then just all went off completely!! (Table lamps and overhead lights) I was there for a week and didn't sleep a wink. I informed receptionist and she said 'oh we've never had hauntings in the New section of the hotel before' - meaning they must have had haunting in the old part!!

When I was about 14 (a long long time ago)I had a weekend job in a home for the elderly serving them tea etc. The dining room there was so creepy and really cold even though the heating was on. I had to pass through it to go upstairs and a few times thought I saw a figure standing in there even when the room was empty. To this day I love all stories of the paranormal and have a real interest in it all. Good thread.

A derelict farm house in a place called Hordron in the Peak District. Came across it while walking, about twenty years ago. Had a nose inside and had this tremendous feeling we needed to get the hell out, and far away. Really creepy.

I’ve not thought about it for donkeys years, and yet the name came back to me straight away.

The school library when I was about 10.

I remember being in there with about five friends and all of a sudden we all stopped talking and felt like there was something in that room with us and we didn't know what. Being that age we had no idea what it was but all said afterwards it was terrifying.

Then again, it was drilled into us that our old redbrick school a boy ran down the stairs in the early 1900's, tripped and died and that's why the carpets are red! Oh and I'm sure Mary Ann Cotton (Britain's first female serial killer) went to school around that area. Maybe it was her after us!

MadCap, doesn’t surprise me. They turn everything into flats in Bristol. I remember it being Manor Park Hospital and Glenside Hospital before it became Blackberry Hill. I believe you can still go to Glenside and see equipment they used to use in the dark early days of mental health treatment. No thanks!

A house for sale outside a small village in Lincolnshire. We went with the agent, as the place had been unoccupied for a year or so.

She takes us into the kitchen, where there’s a plate with toast crumbs, half a mug of tea, and a Daily Mail from earlier that week. Odd but explainable.

Then there was the long hallway with double doors at the end, painted white with ‘portholes’, like old operating theatre doors, through which was a room like a 60s show-house, complete with kidney-shaped mini bar, and the most unpleasant atmosphere.

It probably doesn’t sound creepy, but the place gave me the heebee-jeebees. Those doors were the stuff nightmares.

And don’t get me started on the house that I wanted to run shrieking from within two minutes of stepping through the front door.

Whittenham Clumps in Oxfordshire. Just had a really bad feeling there and in the woods nearby. Even my dad was freaked out.

Auschwitz. I went there on a school trip when I was about 15 and the whole place smelt of death and it was eerily quiet, like we weren't supposed to be there. And a closed mine that's now open to the public on guided tours that again I went to on a school trip called Kilhope Wheel. It's meant to be one of the most haunted places in Britain and the whole time I was down the mine I felt like there was someone following me.
