To think Matilda the musical is a bit pants

I like the book. I like Tim Minchin. The actors were all doing their job v well. But it just didn't do it for me.Yet everyone seems to rave about how amazing it is. Not many catchy tunes. No huge musical numbers to make you gasp. The fear is too pantomime. The pay off not wonderful enough. Or is it just me?

I was a bit disappointed with it too. It was ok but didn’t merit the raving I had heard about it beforehand.

Same! Saw it a couple of years ago, and can't remember it! Felt the same (was only marginally better) about Kinky Boots.

Oh noooooooo. Just spent a fortune on tkts for dd for her birthday.

She is always listening to the soundtrack and loves the songs off it, so hopefully she will like it.

I was looking forward to this too 😖

I absolutely adored it - I thought the songs and choreography were sensational and Bertie Carvel was magnificent as Miss Trunchbull. I would recommend it to anyone so, I'm afraid, YADBU. I ended up seeing it twice because I thought it was so wonderful.

Aladdin on the other had was the biggest pile of garbage Hmm

Also it helps if you listen to all the songs beforehand, as we did.

I thought it was absolutely stunning. I loved what they'd done with the book, adored the choreography in particular and though the Trunchbull stole the show.

I loved it! I’ve seen it three times. Very catchy songs. I’m always singing ‘when I grow up’ and ‘sometimes you have to be a little bit naughty’. How can you resist those song titles.?

I thought it was wonderful! I'm going for the second time next year.

I love it. ‘When I Grow Up’ is a proper tearjerker.

Loved it.

Thought it captured the essence of childhood.

We knew singtrack so that helped.

I’m a sucker for this and billy Elliott though so maybe not best person to ask!

Disagree OP.

I am,not a fan of musicals in general and was t especially looking fo ward to it when we took the kids but was won over completely. The sets are fab and yes, the fear is a bit pantomime, but I rather thought that was the point.

Nothing will ever appeal to everyone of course.

The staging of 'when I grow up' is captivating. I loved the swings.

The songs are very cleverly crafted and it's simply but wittily staged. I LOVED it and had put off seeing it for years thinking I wouldn't. It's different to the likes of Aladdin and Wicked, not all about the glitz but a lot more satisfying.
