This is my first time posting so ill try not to drip feed.
Im a chef and i really love being one. I left y previous job in August due to bullying. It took me a very long time to leave and my new job in a pub was initially awesome. I wasnt given an exact amount of hours, but i was employed as a breakfast and lunch time chef. Next time i come in im td the chef that i was meant to take over from is no longer leaving but my hours were still secure.

I explained that as a parent and single wage household, i needed at least 32 hours and was told that was fine. However i neede to be open to doing 12 split shifts to make my hours up. I couldnt afford to say no really

The head chef is the only salaried member of staff and as such can do what the fuck he likes. He is 19 and often just messes about. He also often has at least 20 fag breaks in a 10 hour shift. On the other hand, if i step out of the kitchen im told off by the owners, even if i have been working for 7 hours.
Obviously over Christmas we are really busy and there was loads of overtime going so i asked to be given some a d again was told tbat was fine. So far i had none of that overtime and this week my rotared hours were 26!!!!! To make matters worse, i have also been the one they send home if they arent busy so actually i have had 24 hours. Im expecting the same next week -although i won't find out till tomorrow. Got to love the organisation-
The management are so rude and unapproachable i literature have no one to complain to. I have been looking elsewhere and i haven't got a contract of employment. WIBU just to tell them to go fuck themselves and quit. And more to the point can i legally do so????

Yes, leave asap/when new job is scoped. Do you have a contract? What's your notice period? If you don't have a contract, you can leave immediately.

Wingedharpy · 17/12/2017 00:59

What will you do for money if you walk out?

MiddleClassProblem · 17/12/2017 01:03

As first poster said, secure another job first then leave.

Is there any notice period you have to do?

Crispbutty · 17/12/2017 01:05

You could almost be me! I’m a chef and I did say fuck you and walked out mid shift this week. Similar circs but I was also put on rota to do three triple spilt shifts (bfast/lunch/dinner) on three consecutive days. Which would have meant 75 miles drive too. Ridiculous!

Just quit if you have another position to go to. You aren’t going to get a reference from them but in this trade as long as you can get a reference from your previous job you will be ok.

Crispbutty · 17/12/2017 01:07

I didn’t explain clearly there, I worked 12 miles from Home so a triple split would mean 6 x 12 miles each day.

Koala2018 · 17/12/2017 01:07

That situation sucks :( I can imagine the frustration. Can you find another job in the mean time and then quit this one? It's not fair what they're doing and I'm sorry this has happened. Get out of there soon for your mental health's sake

PomBearWithAnOFRS · 17/12/2017 01:08

My son is a chef and he has always been able to find a new job when (sadly far too many!) employers have messed him about and treated him like shit.
Find somewhere else to work asap and walk!
Honestly, the jobs are out there and there is always another place that needs staff - you can do without being taken for a mug!
Good Luck finding somewhere that will appreciate you.
And of course you can quit - what are they going to do? hunt you down and drag you to work? As soon as you got less than the agreed hours, they broke their (verbal? written?) contract with you and you NEED those hours - just find somewhere else then walk!

BulletFox · 17/12/2017 01:10

Smile sweetly and leave. Check contract first to make sure everything's correct.

Then flick a V sign as you leave.

Crispbutty · 17/12/2017 01:12

its a very transient job. Chefs often move from job to job at a moments notice. Finding a kitchen that you can spend many years in is rare. We generally move on quite regularly.

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 17/12/2017 01:39

Yep, they're not doing what they said they would, so find another post ASAP and leave immediately you do!

Beerwench · 17/12/2017 02:18

It's bloody hard in the hospitality trade. You get treated like shit and paid a pittance.
I've spent the night on indeed and the like looking for something else because I'm fed up too! That's what I'd advise you to do, as much as you really want to just fuck it off, realistically from your OP, you can't, being a single wage household with children to support. That is a shitty position, and employers know it, they know most people can't leave without something else to go to and they use it.
Grit your teeth and get searching. Can you go agency to at least earn a bit while you search? Or even take something less than your ideal hours and then use agency to top up?
Without a contract at all, or less than 2 years service, I think you can just leave. Though not 100% sure so check that, but if it's right I'd be walking mid service - to repay the shitty behavior!
And a 19yo head chef? How?! That's little experience for someone to be appointed head chef - maybe that's the problem!
Good luck!

Gaudeamus · 17/12/2017 03:13

AFAIK in British law a verbal contract is binding - your contract guaranteed you 32hrs, which hasn't been realised. Therefore your employer has broken their contract with you and you have valid grounds to end the relationship.

Of course, you won't have any income if you leave without a new job. I'm thinking there must be a big bump in agency work this time of year? I'd sign up for that ASAP and look for something permanent in the new year.

I wonder if your skills and availability would suit doing something like outside events catering, food product development or personal cheffing - no idea how frequently those gigs come up, but it might be worth thinking of a slightly new direction as the restaurant kitchen atmosphere is so horrible.

Yes.Walk out as soon as possible. You are not being unreasonable.
