AIBU?

Balloon Weight Loss and Slimming World

My friend and I go to Slimming World, I have a lot to lose, she wants to lose 3 stone which is about right for her. She has had a balloon fitted in her stomach this year and is of course losing weight quickly. She is very happy about it and I wish her all the best if she feels this is the right way for her.

My issue is that although she has told me, she hasn't told the group consultant and is therefore winning slimmer of the week and month pretty much every time. She has also been nominated for woman of the year and will probably win.

AIBU to think this is a bit unfair on the rest of the group because everyone thinks this has been achieved by following the plan? The group leader keeps advocating her as an inspiration to us all but its probably the balloon that is the real key here. She does sometimes follow the plan but she has told me that she also overeats and this makes her sick. I'm honestly not jealous of her weight loss because its really helped boost her, and of course she doesn't need to tell anyone she doesn't want to. It just seems a bit unfair to keep winning the awards or am I a petty mare? Disclaimer I know the awards are not important in the grand scheme of things!

Yeah, that does sound a little unfair... Though I think WW / Slimming World etc need to be taken with a pinch of salt, so not sure how worked up I can get about it.

Definitely unfair on the rest of the group who might be following the plan really closely and wondering why they aren't losing as much as her. Would be tempted to say something..

Seems to me that she is cheating really.

If I say something it might look like sour grapes though? I don't want to look petty?

Of course its wrong but how could you spill the beans without losing a friendship ?

Report
Whiterabbitears · 14/12/2017 15:36

I don't think I can spill the beans, it would affect us. I'm not sure what the solution is, I'm just not looking forward to our group tonight and hear the leader and other members gush again about how well shes doing. She is doing well but not cos of the plan, I'm a crap friend I know.

Other women in the class could be wondering why their weight loss is slower and trying unhealthy dangerous steps to speed it up.

It is unfair of her not to be honest about it,

I don't think she is being a brilliant friend either expecting you to cover for her while she gets the praise, but no you can't really say anything.

Of course there is a ridiculous competitiveness to the group so yes some people are trying to win the slimmer of the week and are demotivated when its her every time.

I think you should Encourage her to mention it to the group leader - tell her a couple of the group are upset as they are struggling to match her loss?

I wish I didn't know tbh.

I went to slimming world a few years ago and this one woman kept winning slimmer of the week/month/year I was getting really annoyed and asked her what did she do because she would say “well I had a kebab last week, and pizza...”.

We lived locally and I saw her in our local pub toilet one night with her mates and she was sniffing coke and she laughed and said how do you think I lose weight so quick!

I think she should tell the leader too, I'm not sure why she hasn't. A few friends of hers not in the group know too so its not a complete secret.

Why is she going to SW in the first place if she loses weight without following the plan? Confused

Whiterabbitears · 14/12/2017 16:16

A very good question! Do I sound like a cow if I say its because shes quite enjoying the attention? I honestly can't think of another reason because its boring as fuck and the clapping gets on my tits!

Given she is working hard to defeat the balloon by stuffing herself to the point of vomiting, I wouldn't worry about cutesy-woo awards. She's going to do some real damage if she doesn't sort this.

pity there isn't a 'never got fat' award. I really hate the diet industry.

specialsubject it’s the junk food/cafe/gingerbread latte industry you should be hating.

I think this is really cheeky and you should tell the leader. She's a fraud. I remember Fern Britten did exactly the same thing having a gastric band and saying it was all down to exercise and healthy eating in articles about her weight loss.

Mouikey · 14/12/2017 20:33

I have a gastric bypass and joined sliming world ages ago to help me keep on track and make better food choices. I never told anyone as none of their business but I also didn’t go for the attention (and in fact didn’t stay for long because it was dire! As it was the first second third and forth time round prior to surgery!). But it sounds as though her motivations are possibly different... however don’t forget that the balloon is a very temporary measure (generally 6 months) and can be really really uncomfortable. Why she wouldn’t want to work with it I don’t know - not doing herself any favours. She will regret it linger term
