What is it you're saying is OTT, OP? I don't understand that part of your post. 'Merry Christmas' is still a popular phrase where I am.

How can it be OTT?

Everyone uses Merry Christmas.

Are you the "everyone is saying Happy Holidays now" poster?

Everyone uses Merry Christmas Hmm

Is this the myth that no one is allowed to say it anymore in case someone is offended? If so that’s a load of crap.

Actually "Merry" is a lovely but underused word. It tends to mean a bit drunk nowadays whereas I like the older meaning of it.

Betting the OP says 'Happy Holidays' Bubble.

Sounds kind of unreasonable. What exactly annoys you about it?

Literally everyone says Merry Christmas. All the bolloxing time.

The Queen apparently uses 'happy Christmas' in her Christmas speech to avoid the connotations of drunkenness attached to 'merry'*

*disclaimer - may be an urban myth [fmsile].

Yanbu op.

We have loads of American friends and it's not acceptable.

I never ever want to not be able to say 'Merry Christmas'.

Err... everyone I knows says merry Christmas.
What’s OTT? Is this a Muslim bashing post or an American bashing post?

YABU - I usually say merry Christmas but I'm just as happy to receive any friendly greeting.

Everyone I know says Merry Christmas. But not for another week or so yet. Maybe that's the issue.

But not for another week or so yet

Exactly... it’s not Christmas yet so haven’t heard anyone giving any form of Christmas greetings this year!

It's all "Happy Christmas" here. People would look at you crossways if you said "Merry" Christmas. That's because is not the norm.

But the thoughts and feelings are the same either way. All good.

Ecureuil · 13/12/2017 19:19

Happy Christmas is fine too. Means the same.
