Yabu

Do you think a burger is a sandwich?

A hot dog is a hot dog - a bun and no butter

A sausage sandwich has butter

They are clearly totally different

A hotdog is a sausage

Stick it in a bun and it becomes a hotdog in a bun.

Same as a burger is a burger but if you stick it in a bun, it becomes a burger in a bun.

Fuck this, I'm really hungry now Confused

I'd say it is a very distant relative of the sandwich.
It involves a bread product and a filling
bu the bread isn;t flat is a roll thing, and the filling is hot, and the filling is a single object not chopped up or anything.
A sausage sandwich has the sausage cut in half lengthways and flat bread.

A hot dog is to a sandwich what a chimpanzee is to a human being. Same ball park but there's no mistaking one for the other.

Boak at the thought of butter in a sausage sandwich Envy

I agree with KurriKurri though

If I asked for a hot dog sandwich I do wonder what would turn up

I had a lengthy conversation with a group of people (many of whom were American, if that puts anything in context?!) and we all had varying degrees of strict sandwich definition.
NB We're all geeks. We're all food junkies.

What is a sandwich? Anything between bread? Does it have to be sliced bread? Is a sub a sandwich? Panini?
Does the bread/outer have to be buttered/spread with something? Do only certain fillings constitute a sandwich?

So many questions.

My original answer was that a hotdog isn't a sandwich. But I can't really put my finger on why not.

I think a burger, whilst not being a real sandwich, is further down the sandwich continuum than a hotdog. Grin

Your dh is right.
A hot dog is sort of a distant cousin of a sandwich. Technically is it bread, surrounding a filling, but it just is a very different things from a sausage sandwich, so it can't actually be considered a sandwich.

Might be the finger roll it's served in!!

Yabu. It's not a sandwich. Neither is a burger.

When discussing sandwich fillings no one ever says hot dogs or burgers.

It is just a dialect difference between countries. In the US, ‘sandwich’, ‘burger’ and ‘roll’ refer to similar food items.

A sandwich requires at least part of the filling/ and OR the bread surface to have at least one flat plane.

A hot dog has none, unless you count the two shallow inverted surfaces of the cut bread roll. Which is tenuous enough to say it doesn't count as a sandwich.

There being butter in it doesn't make it a sandwich. That's twisted talk right there; verging on depravity

Butter in sandwiches. Hang your head in shame.

Sandwiches are flat. If you can’t fit it through a small letterbox it’s not a sandwich.

A sandwich is made of sliced bread (sliced at home or at the factory). Anything in any form of roll is not a sandwich. Cheese in a roll is a cheese roll. Sausage in a roll is a hot dog (not to be confused with a sausage roll ....)

Oh sorry. Techically a hotdog and a burger are sandwiched. Just like technically a tomato is a fruit. But just as you don't add a tomato to your fruit salad you don't class a hot dog as a sandwich.

But, tasking my pedant hat off for a moment, a hot dog is not a sandwich. It is a roll. It has a tubular shape. If you were to put it on the floor and roll it, it may even turn over a little bit. Try that with a sandwich!

No it’s not a sandwich, it’s a hotdog.

Would you put a hotdog in between two slices of bread from a regular loaf? .....no and that proves it’s NOT a sandwich. It’s a sausage in a bun, but it’s only similar to a sandwich.

A sandwich intends to squash the contents, whatever they are, between the two outer layers of carb-i-ness. A hotdog is a sausage supported by a bun, no squashing intended, maybe just a light top dressing of condiments.
