Ok i know im a grumpy old sod.
After an afternoon with a tricky class i reglected on something i oftwn think about....how much i prefer animals to human company .
( dp excepted.)

Animals are so much more simple, honest and just easier to be around.
Give me cats over colleagues any day.

I love animals and people.

You don't have to be for just one or the other

I am highly suspicious of people that don’t like animals.

There’s a few people I liked until I found out they hated cats, for example. Just can’t see them the same way now.

Taffeta: that's odd, as I feel just the same way about cat lovers who make daft statements like yours...

Apart from a few people who I love, I prefer animals to people. Have done since I was a child. Can’t see me changing.

Really Taffeta?? I don’t particularly like cats. I’m a good person, I work for a homelessness charity, I give to other charities every month, I worship at a church who does amazing things to help the local community and I join them in this. But I don’t particularly like cats. I would never harm them or hurt them. I just don’t like them. Does that now make me a bad person?

And we think animals are better than people because they don’t think and reason and talk. But a cat will kill a mouse and play with it while it dies - if a human did that to a lesser being we’d call them a psychopath. People like animals because they don’t criticise them or hurt them or challenge them. Not because animals are ‘better’ than humans. That’s just nonsense

YANBU

My dogs only ever want feeding and cuddling, with the odd stick lobbed across the garden. They don’t phone DH and ask “what does Adora want us to do for her birthday?” in PA tones that mean - I’m organising what I want for her birthday because I’m the matriarch and as such I know best.

Anyone who believes their cat gives a flying fuck about them is deluded. They may suck up to you when they want something but guarenteed to be cheating on you with neighbours.

My aunt used to rant about how she loved her dog like a baby. Then it died and was replaced within a month.

I don't think you are BU
Unless you eat animals, then that is a little hypocritical 😁

Hmm, I agree with this. I like my cat, but he's devoted only (and temporarily) to the hand that dishes the Felix.

My dog genuinely loves me, though

I prefer cats over dogs precisely because they are independent. They are not arselickers 😁

I agree with Hipho

I like the fact my dog isn't independent of me! We need each other which I love. When the baby will not stop crying, he comes and sits next to me on the bed. It's like he's telling me "it's ok, I love you. Even if she doesnt"! Haha

Inclined to agree.

Met a lovely cat on a walk yesterday who seemed overly friendly and cuddly, wondered if he was a stray. Thought about him today as it's been so cold, hope he's OK. Don't usually think twice about cats I see but he struck a cord.

if dogs or cats had evolved so that they had a level of brain power comparable to humans would they be more moral, or more rational?

To say that pets are better than humans makes no sense at all, yes they may be much easier company because they behave in a way which we perceive to be affectionate and they dont question you or make any complex demands.
They dont lie or deceive you, not because they are benevolent but because they dont have the intelligence to do so, generally they dont attack you because they have been domesticated by humans.
They arent wild creatures they are human artifacts.

Dont forget that if you died they'd eat your face

we like dogs because we have selectively bred them to be docile, playful and friendly,
ie we have created creatures which we find to be good companion animals...we like them because we custom made them to our requirements

I loved my dogs, more than anyone outside my immediate family and sometimes would prefer spending time with them, to anyone else.

However if the shit hit the fan and a disaster happened, say Zombie apocalypse, or terrorist attack (if you prefer reality), then we rely on each other. We also send our children out into the World with the hope that they encounter nice/kind people, so I try to be one, myself.

"if dogs or cats had evolved so that they had a level of brain power comparable to humans would they be more moral, or more rational?"

If you study Wolf Packs, then the answer would be, yes, they and other animals are superior, in a lot of ways.

there are no canines which have evolved a level of cognitive ability which parallels that of humans, one can postulate the emergence of such a species but one cannot infer it's behavior from studying that of wolves or any other existing canines

it makes no sense to say that wolves are superior to humans, they are not the same category of beings

The abuse that Humans inflict on every other living thing, doesn't exist in the animal world.

I watch a lot of stuff about Monkeys and Apes and their societies are so much more nurturing.

Luckily, they are very different beings to us. Unfortunately, we've over bred and populated everywhere.

I loudly state I prefer animals to humans frequently, mostly because I do. Every animal I've ever kept has been loyal and loving and there for me whatever happened. Humans on the other hand, have been horrible, so yeah. I'm in the animals win camp.
