AIBU?

To think the emergency services should charge these 'pranksters' for being stupid?

Okay so I understand that the emergency services are there to save people's lives and this situation could have been fatal but they brought it on themselves and I believe that they should be charged for the 1 hour and 30 minutes of time wasted when they could have attended genuine emergencies.

I've linked the sky news story.

Yanbu. I think more time wasters should be charged.

What a total idiot. Usually natural selection takes care of people like that.

It should be a criminal offence to recklessly endanger yourself such that emergency services are called out. Exemptions would be needed for mental illness.

you can add all the drunks that take up their time as well

They should make him pay in full for all of the emergency treatment he received, as well as a large fine.

He should also be prosecuted. Dumbfuck.

I thought it was an offence to waste time and people could be charged? Or is that just police? As soon as the plan involved 'put head in plastic bag' you'd think they might've had second thoughts!!

Coconuttella I completely agree that exceptions should be made for mental illness.

This was a guy filming a YouTube video, unfortunately they are going to make more money because of the publicity the story has received therefore I think they should be charged, they had an ambulance crew and a fire crew at the scene for an hour and a half. I wouldn't like to hazard a guess about how much that cost, not only that but the NHS is under a lot of pressure without the need for fools to do stupid things in order to get 'famous' on the internet.

When I am Overlord, Being Bloody Stupid will be a criminal office Wink

Seriously though what utter prats. A few days community service would be a fitting repayment of that callout.

Yes I agree. An Ambulance used to only be called in real emergency, even back when transport and house phones were a luxury.

Substance abuse and over dramatics must cost the NHS a fortune. It is a €100 charge to attend A&E in Ireland, unless you are unemployed. €60 to see the GP. Unfortunately it has the opposite effect lots of people put off their health issues because of the costs.

The fire service call up is up to €750.00 euro, though that is usually covered under house insurance.

Idiot.

Even if his stupid plan had worked, it would have been a very irresponsible thing to put on the internet in case any other idiots copied him to make their own head casts.

Just what I was thinking Gimble. Prime contender for a Darwin Award were it not for the skills of the Fire Service.

Also, I wish people would not link/click through to their YouTube videos. Getting clicks is exactly what these oxygen thieves want.

That hoax call woty murder is horrific. If they catch them they should be prosecuted.

Whilst I agree the microwave guys are arises and probably deserve a fine, the difficulty is where do you draw the line? Lots of people who need emergency services cause themselves harm accidentally- DIY accidents, coming off bikes, alcohol related injuries. Do you charge them all? What about people who come in with a heart attack from a poor diet and obesity? Or lung cancer as lifetime smokers? Or people who take children into A&E because they panic and really it could have waited for a GP or just not seen at all? And what happens when people then have other accidents or emergencies and don't get help in case they're charged. An old lady slipping over worried OT might be seen as her own fault because she slipped on something she split.

They are absolute idiots , I think the video shouldn't be up unless its an apology to the emergency services but I think fines etc when its not a hoax is a dangerous thin edge of the wedge

I think You're putting a lot of weight on charging. They get charged say £250, pay up, they've paid their dues. Doesn't stop the incident from happening.

It's education that's needed

I think drunks should be charged the £500 it takes to get an ambulance out too!

DH can work a 12/13 hour shift with no break then 5 minutes before he's due to finish some arse will decide he's too drunk to get himself home and call the ambulance taxi service!!!! adding at least another hour onto an already long and stressful day

Yes they’ve behaved terribly, but I agree with sleeping standing up on this one

Where do you draw the line, as so much of what we do is ‘self inflicted’. If you break your leg skiing or horse riding? You know those are risky activities. Etc

Better education and publicly condemning this behaviour would be better in my view

It's difficult as so much is silly and preventable but when you need them you need them.

But there's no denying this was incredibly stupid and it wasted alot if their time and the people should he bloody ashamed that they almost killed their friend and not one of them had a single brain cell functioning.

I hope the family are giving them what for. Both barrels.

And that hoax call article. Just Shock eye is wrong with with people. All those resources wasted who could have been with someone else. And that poor poor handler. They are just people themselves not emotionless robots and their mental health is as delicate as everyone else's .

Idiots. Selfish idiots.

I think drunks should be charged the £500 it takes to get an ambulance out too! but again what is the line? I get tipsy cos in out without a toddler attached, trip over in my new shoes and need an ambulance. I get so drink I pass out in the street and need resus. Presumably you would charge £500 after treatment not withhold treatment before paying? So what if I don't pay / can't pay and need an ambulance again? You propose the ambulance team come out, ID me and leave me there? Or treat me then take me to court? And when on that continuum do you start charging? I might have slipped over anyway with PR wothoit drink.

Agree upthread that what is needed is public condemning and the blocking of these videos, charges where it is an actual hoax not a self inflicted idiot
