AIBU or are these dogs totally illegal in UK?

A friend on FB came up on my feed because she "liked" her friends post selling pit bull puppies for £250 each.

WIBU to report this? I mean to the police rather than FB.

YANBU to report this to the police. Pit bulls are banned in the UK. It is illegal to own, breed or sell them.

They probably aren't even pit bulls. So many idiots breed staff or ambull crosses & then claim pit because it makes them look hard. What they are actually doing is signing their dog's death warrant.

It is illegal to breed or give away/sell pit bulls. It is not illegal to own one but it comes with huge strings, which are also costly. If you ring the police you are sentencing those pups to death.

Certainly, it is worth mentioning to the police.

It’s a difficult one because ‘pit bull’ covers a very wide spectrum. It isn’t really a breed in itself but a type.

There are far far worse things that can happen to a puppy/dog than being put swiftly and humanely to sleep.

Please ring the police and RSPCA

Please don't report to the police, dogs can be seized and put to sleep for doing absolutely nothing wrong.

Pit bull is not actually a breed but a 'type' which is determined by measurements. Have a little Google on breed specific legislation and you'll find so many families paying thousands to try and save their beloved family pets who have never turned on anyone or any animal and been nothing but loving who are condemned to death because of the way they look. Most of these dogs are actually American bulldogs, staffies etc with full lineage yet a tape measure condemns them.

If you are in any way an animal lover I would mail the person selling them and tell them about breed specific legislation and the fact that they are posting publicly calling their own dogs pit bulls is putting them at risk and hope they are one of the people who aren't aware 😞.

Won't get into the debate that there is absolutely no need to be breeding more bull breeds considering how full all rescues are at the moment but these puppies are innocent.

Have a little look at born innocent on Facebook, it's a page and group set up to help people struggling with BSL.

Deed not breed :)

YNK · 07/12/2017 16:58

It's clear from the responses saying they would go to the police that this woman has signed the death warrant of these puppies.
BSL is a cruel unnecessary law that has never prevented one person being bitten but has caused the cruel destruction of many good dogs and loyal family members.

I am certainly an animal lover.

They've referred to them as Belgian Pit Bulls but I can't seem to find a definitive list online of which types are and aren't illegal.

That doesn't even look like a staff pup ffs 😂😂 that's a bitzer if ever there was one. But as above, BSL still stands. I know of lab crosses being kept in police kennels for years through BSL - unfortunately the typing process is not the kind, heartful process people think it is. I had an Ambull x seized by the police a few years back, before I understood BSL - my family pet went from being soft as shit to being an uncontrollable monster in four months. Police kennels are brutal & serve no purpose but to back the theory that some dogs are dangerous.

Please don't go to the police. They are babies. Message your friend or even the seller & warn them that people monitor selling sites looking for trigger words such as PIT.

I was going to say report. Then I saw that beautiful wee puppy face and honestly, it would be heartbreaking for that wee soul to be put to sleep

But it would be awful if the cute little puppy grew into a massive dog and bit the face off a toddler. Obviously it does depend on the owner's training but the reason why people want these breeds is to be aggressive.

NumberEightyOne · 07/12/2017 17:16

Beautiful puppy but it doesn't look at all well.

Report
mustbemad17 · 07/12/2017 17:16

That's a huge stereotype Kinder I deliberately chose staffs/ambulls because of their personalities. Never had an aggressive one yet & they were all rescues. Not everybody who chooses a bull breed wants a monster

Report
Auvergne · 07/12/2017 17:17

Pit bulls generally aren’t aggressive to people, or no more so than any other dog, but it is other dogs they tend to be aggressive with and when people have been hurt it’s either when caught in the crossfire or a toddler.

They are a fighting breed, unfortunately. They are bred to be fearless, aggressive to other dogs and very loyal to their ‘master’. It can be a lethal combination.

BSL is an absolutely abhorrent law that condemns innocent animals to death. Other countries don’t have it and don’t have a problem with Pit Bull attacks. Please don’t report them.

My dd came home one day with a part pit puppy that had been treated so badly, I dint want a dog but he convinced me to keep him. He is an absolute nightmare for me to walk because he fights with other dogs when he is with me, but behaves better with the children. Other than that he is an absolute angel, I love him so much now I couldn't be without him.

TitaniasCloset · 07/12/2017 17:24

Auvergne is absolutely right, that is exactly my dogs nature.

How do you know so much about them?

Report
mustbemad17 · 07/12/2017 17:24

There has been no decrease in dog bites/attacks since BSL came into play, which is very telling.

If you have concerns for the dogs' welfare ie think they are ill/being mistreated that is one thing, but please, as someone who has been there, don't condemn these babies to hell just because some idiot has decided to label them wrong

I have a staffy cross who is the most biddable, loyal dog I've ever owned.
She is soft and gentle with my grandson and other children and very well mannered around other dogs.

People often aim kicks at her in the park and say awful things about her and I'm sure many of the people here baying for blood would be happy to hear this.

It's nothing short of discrimination.

mustbemad17 · 07/12/2017 17:26

YNK that was the same with my girlie. Ex breeding bitch at 9 so detested other dogs near her, but if idiots let their dogs get in her face & she responded it was me in the wrong. The attitude towards bull breeds is ridiculous but sadly won't change because we are punishing the wrong end of the lead

I 'condemned a dog to death' when my neighbours got an adorable pit bull puppy and failed to train it or look after it or keep it secure. Suddenly, a large and powerful dog that was totally undisciplined and out of control was frequently breaking through our fence and escaping, posing a huge danger to everyone. We couldn't step into our garden without it rushing in, we have small children and it was not a friendly dog. It started displaying signs of aggression; we called the police before a tragedy occurred - and it was seriously inevitable. The dog was innocent, it was euthanised and some people on here felt I should have let it attack my toddler before acting but the truth is that while I do agree it's deed not breed, are the people buying pit bulls off FB really the kind of responsible owners who can ensure that dog is safe? My friend lives abroad and has a lovely pitbull but over here, people buying them illegally are very likely to be the last people in the world who should have any dog at all but certainly not one with so much strength and power.

I don't agree with the act that bans pits; I did a lot of reading about it. I think dog legislation needs a massive overhaul to actually be effective. But some idiot selling pit bull puppies over the Internet to other idiots is condemning those dogs to death and potentially causing harm to others along the way. It is not our fault for reporting; the responsibility for those dogs' deaths does not lie with you if you do the right thing and report the crime.

Captain in your position I would have done the same. At no point would anybody (I hope) berate you for protecting your family.

The problem is, it isn't just thugs that buy staff/ambull/cross pups. By reporting a litter of puppies you are basically saying you can see into the future. Which you can't. Any dog can be trained to be aggressive - when you have seen a friendly looking retriever turn into a salavitating monster on one word, you realise the full extent of that. BSL is like racism in dog form.

In America, where Pit Bulls are allowed you are more likely to be bitten by a Chihuahua.

No, they aren't, sadly.
