To think this is really inconvenient ?

So national grid are replacing the gas pipes on my street and in my home.. ( why don't people just stick to the saying if it's not broken don't fix it!) so today is 'my appointment' for them to come and disconnect my gas to do this. So I had to allow them in at 8am this morning ( I told them to come back at 9 as I said I had breakfast and kids to get off at school) so they came and disconnected it and now I have to wait all evening between 4pm-8pm for them to restore my gas supply. So they could come at any point whilst I'm cooking and I will have to cook tea ( gas cupboard is in my kitchen next to my cooker in a cupboard!)
So now my kids will have to eat their tea whilst having strangers come in and out of the house. It's annoyed me! And we have had no hot water all day!
Am I being unreasonable to think this is inconvenient and unacceptable ?

It’s a pain but it’s just one day and I’m sure they’re not doing it for fun!

That sounds annoying, but what's the alternative?

Yeah, they are only doing this work for the sheer fun of it... yabu

YABU there is likely a safety issue. Old pipes have to be replaced every so often. Gas is dangerous if it leaks. You would be pretty pissed off if there was an explosion.
I'm sure the kids will cope.

Just like having any other tradespeople in the house for a job that needs doing.

YABU.
They don’t go around replacing pipes for the sheer fun of inconveniencing people, they do it to ensure supply security: replacing old ones before they leak and making sure they’ve got sufficient capacity for development growth.
They’ve given you enough notice to go out for the day or to borrow electric heaters if it’s that bad.

It's inconvenient, but it's acceptable.

YABU. Sometimes in life we are inconvenienced.

No, what would be unacceptable would be if they didn’t maintain the pipes and your house blew up one night while you were cooking tea.

YABU. your children will not suffer by having a man walk into their kitchen.
It needs to be done, and its not a big deal.

It’s inconvenient but so are a lot of things in life....do your children self combust if they have to eat tea with a workman in the house?

So you didn’t allow them to come in when they should have started at 8 and now you’re being grumpy because you have to wait a while for it to be turned back on? How would you react if those old pipes had frozen and burst on say Xmas Day? Then you’d let them in eh? Poor workmen, just trying to do their job 😳

You aren't being unreasonable to think it's inconvenient but yabu and sounding more than a smidge ridiculous to complain about it being unacceptable. Unless they've decided to spend all their profits upgrading pipes that don't need upgrading, then there is obviously a reason for it. It's not fun for anyone to have their gas turned off for the day but it's definitely preferable to having your house explode.

why don't people just stick to the saying if it's not broken don't fix it! Hmmm, maybe because they prefer the saying 'A stitch in time saves nine'?

As others have said, it's irritating and inconvenient, but really not unacceptable. Be glad it's a one day job - they don't do these things for fun. And has really isn't one of the things you want to wait until it's broke to fix...

Or gas, even.

It’s annoying but that’s all. Lots of stuff is annoying, that’s just life.

Is rather one day of no gas than faulty gas pipes tbh

I prefer the saying "I don't want to die in gas explosion"

It sounds like your cooker isn't gas, so you haven't really been without hot water available, have you? I could understand it being a problem if you cooked on gas too.

Blimey. Are you Tamara Ecclestone (or whatever her name is)? She comes across as spoilt and tantrummy, too.

YABU. We had this back in september. Inconvenient... but friendly guys, and tbh they did it as quickly as they could and were polite. It’s just one day, I’m sure your kids won’t be too traumatised.

If your kids can’t cope with eating their tea when there are strangers in your house, you’ve got bigger problems than just being awkward and obstructive.
