Oh FFS! Recommend to me a child's thermometer that actually functions properly!

I seem to be caught in a cycle of ones that are utter shite!

All I want it to do:

-Take the temperature quickly without me having to take any of DC's clothes off.

  • Display that temperature on an illuminated screen that I can read at night without having to turn on any lights.
  • Keep that display showing for more than a nanosecond so that I can work out if DS is just a bit warm or whether I need to give him some calpol.

The latest one I have been using has attracted my ire by suddenly deciding to switch to displaying in Fahrenheit rather than Celsius. No doubt either DS or I have pressed its buttons in a particular way to cause it to do so but I have zero inclination to find and read the instruction book at 3.30am to work out how to switch it back. I don't work in F so therefore have no idea if 100.4 is a little or a lot over normal temp. Stupid fucking machine!Angry

I used to find a basic forehead strip was the best.

Braun digital - £35 seemed a huge amount for a thermometer but it Work's perfectly and is worth every penny.

The pediatric drs at the hospital recommended the braun digital thermometer to me when dd was admitted, i had a forehead strip and they said they were not very acurate so potentialy very dangerous.

I love the Braun in ear digital but the problem is you can't see the display in the dark, right?
You can't on mine at any rate.

Braun digital here too. We're on our second one - first was bought when DS was born and he's now 12. We replaced it last year when a doc told me that they lose their accuracy after a while (they use them in the surgeries and hospitals and replace them maybe every year or two I think he said). He was disputing my DD had a temp of over 40 for a week. Anyway, we replaced it and the new one always gives the same readings as the old one so actually there was no need to replace it as it was clearly still accurate and working fine after 11 years. However, the new one does have the light up screen that the old one didn't have so is actually better for using at night when they're sleeping and you don't want to disturb them too much. Definitely recommend them

Mine doesn't, because its an older version, but the one I've linked to on Amazon does.

We have a Braun in ear one too

I hate my Braun Thermascan.

Get a different bloody reading every time?

I tend to use it until I've had x3 almost identical readings (ie same give or take 0.1 of a degree)

I've found readings can fluctuate by up a whole degree.

It must just be me though as everyone else loves it.

We have a Withings one, think it's about £80. It charges via a wire, no messing about with batteries. You just wave it over your forehead and then can assign the reading to the correct family member and see the results on an app on your phone, as well as on the digital display on the device. It's expensive, but having 2 small children, for us we think it was worth the money.

Bought an Calpol/in the ear one years ago. It's the best gadget I ever got for her. Not sure if still available. Would buy a Braun one now if there was no Calpol one anymore. She's now 10.

I product tested a very expensive Nokia thermo one for mumsnet not long ago. It's easy to use, but I'm not convinced how accurate it is. To be honest I usually go by touch - if they feel warm, take off a layer, if they feel hot and /or seem otherwise uncomfortable then give calpol.

I have problems with testing temperature with my hands (MS). I kiss dd on the forehead for a pointer. Then in ear thermometer.

We have the Braun in ear one but tbh I haven’t found one that is any more accurate than just feeling them. If extremities are hot I give Calpol.

This one is brilliant. Can use in ear or forehead. Very accurate. Lit up screen.

I have a forehead scanner it's fab was from Aldi about £15/20 can be done in the dark and you get a happy green face or a sad red face as well as the temp which all is illuminated

My 17yo Braun one stopped being accurate last year. We call it the random number generator. I'm not back to using an old fashioned under the tongue one as the dc are old enough.

You can get the disposable tempadot thermometers that they use in hospitals on Amazon or eBay. I've stopped trying to get digital thermometers to cooperate and now only use these.

I’m a nurse and I don’t own a thermometer. I look at my child and if they look flushed and are really uncomfortable because they feel ill I give calpol.

A raised temperature is your body’s natural defence against infection, routinely administering antipyrexials just because the thermometer says the body temperature is over whatever cut off you use can actually prolong the illness.
