To think this taxi driver was in the wrong?

Booked a taxi by app to go to the train station. Got in the taxi and he said so you’re going to the train station?

Half way there he said I’d picked a different destination and that’s why the journey was cheaper. I apologised and said I’d always selected that destination on the app and no one taxi driver had ever mentioned it.

He then dropped me off outside of the taxi office and demanded I pay him more (fare was paid for by card) and I said I didn’t have any money (true).

I said well take me into your office then and I’ll pay the rest on my card and he quickly changed his mind.

He was genuinely horrible to me, lecturing me and he didn’t even drop me off at the station anyway.

So where were you going?

So did he drop you at a different location than the one you selected on the app or not?

Report
confusedlittleone · 03/12/2017 09:47

So was the destination you'd put and it and where you actually wanted to go different?

Report
Bluntness100 · 03/12/2017 09:47

I don’t understand either, where were you going then?

Complain to the company as it sounds like he may be chancing his arm. If he gets complaints against his name, he may be more likely to think twice.

I'm confused too. So either you were or weren't going to the train station? And which bit was cheaper?

I was going to the train station and I selected that on the app but apparently the one I selected is on the way to the station and not the station itself (3 minutes difference)

It was a genuine mistake on my part.

He carried on driving me, constantly lecturing me and then stopped his car outside one of their offices and said I had to now pay him more.

I had no cash and said I would go into the office right now and pay. At that point he quickly changed his mind.

I then had to walk the rest of the way to the station.

Why didn't you go into the office regardless and complain?

Report
Ontheboardwalk · 03/12/2017 09:56

So the taxi driver dropped you off where you had paid up to but you wanted him to take you further for free?

Report
Redsippycup · 03/12/2017 09:57

So he didn't even take you to the destination you had paid for?

He was trying to get cash out of you.

Report him to the company, he's going to give them a bad reputation.

I'm confused. You ordered a taxi to the wrong destination, with no cash and expected the driver to take you further than you'd booked for?

Report
metalmum15 · 03/12/2017 10:11

Next time just ring up and state where you want to go, surely they can't get confused then.

harrypotternerd · 03/12/2017 10:11

im confused, why could you not pay for the taxi with your card in the taxi? all taxis I have been in have had credit card machines. Did you expect him to drive you further for free? if you were going to a train station anyway why couldn't you get on the earlier one?

I’d always selected that destination on the app and no one taxi driver had ever mentioned it.

Why have you always selected the wrong, cheaper, destination on the app and expected the drivers to take you further for free? After the first time you must be aware you were booking the wrong destination.

Sounds like it’s about time you were pulled up for it.

I'm confused too. You chose the station location but that's not the station?

Report
Bluntness100 · 03/12/2017 10:17

So if I understand you correctly. You selected and paid to go to one train station. You actually wished to go to another one nearly five mins further drive away, you had no money to pay for the extra drive, but expected him to take you for free and are upset he challenged you on it, because you do it all the time and the other taxi drivers drive you the extra distance for free.

Is this right?

I think people are misunderstanding.

She booked a journey to the train station. He then tells her it's wrong despite every other taxi driver understanding where she wants to go.

He then takes her to his office instead and demands money. She offers to go in and pay, at which time his bosses will see she chose the right destination and he's wrong. He panics and back tracks, says she doesn't have to pay, but continues to berate her and still not drop her off at the train station.

OP report him. He was lying. I doubt somehow that no other taxi driver hasn't noticed the 'mistake', they tend to know where they are going. He wanted to intimidate you into getting more money and does it a lot.

Contact the company and explain to them. Either there's an issue in their system that needs fixing wrt the stations, as you won't be the only one who has done this - or the driver was completely trying it on. I suspect its trying it on as he was after the cash and not you going into their office and paying the difference.

Bluntness100 · 03/12/2017 10:18

Advice, I think you’ve misunderstood, I’m sorry. He knew where she wanted to go, but she selected the closer station and expected him to drive her to the further away one for free.

I suppose it could be that the app identifies a place as "by the station" but if you actually want to ENTER the station, you need to be driven much further around to the actual station entrance (say entrance only on one side of the tracks).
(or one side just lets you in with an already bought ticket, but generally you'd want to go to the other side to buy a ticket if not got one already)

If you book through Uber or Gett you don’t need cash, the app is linked to your bank card. You just get out at the end it magically takes the money. I assume whatever app the OP used is the same.

There’s usually an option to change destination mid route, the money then still comes out the same way - was this not an option?

Does the train station have two entrances? I know many that do and dropping at the back or front would take a different amount of time depending which way you drive. Also, GPS sometimes thinks somewhere is where it isn’t. It sounds like the GPS destination thing says the station is a little off where it actually is and previous drivers just went to the station anyway.

It sounds like there was confusion on both sides, but this driver wasn’t very nice about it. You offered to pay at the offices so weren’t trying to avoid paying.

So you acknowledge that it was your mistake.

FWIW 3 mins journey is a good few quid.
