to think that juicing is nonsense?

My local naice supermarket now sells the nutribullet thingy and a huge selection of smoothie booster powders and potions, all of which look hugely expensive.

Is this the latest fad? Why can’t you just eat veg in the normal way, and maybe take vitamins now and then? What’s the deal with it all being whizzed up?

What’s the different between eating something and having a drink? Hmm

JoJo - quite a lot in terms of absorption, esp when it comes to sugar in fruit. If you juice it, you're basically getting liquid sugar. If you eat it, you get all the fibre etc and your body has to work to break it down so it takes longer to process and you don't get such a sugar hit in one go. My dietician when I had GD described it as being like removing the brown paper from the parcel.

The point of juicing is to get all the nutrients from a LARGE quantity of fruit or beg into a glass without having to physically eat 8 carrots, half a melon, 6 kiwis and a kilo of kale.
Drawbacks are, it lacks fibre and is often high in sugar, and is a quite expensive way to 'eat'.

Isn’t it cheaper to buy innocent smoothies or veg drink or whatever anyway?

I actually thought the thread was going to be about a juicing diet, where you have about 20 calories a day for weeks on end to lose weight - I have much stronger views on that, having given myself some delightful little gallstones with rapid weight loss on "lighter life"!

Nutribullets and blenders don't juice, they blend. Juicers on the other hand extract the juice and.. juice. You get easier absorption and are able to consume a lot more vegetables, together with good things like protein powders, in this way. I stopped using my juicer long ago and only blend now.

Queen - they've often been treated so they're not as fresh, I believe

So with the nutribullet it whizzes up everything? Peach stones and skin etc? Shock

What’s the juicing diet? Presumably liquid only veg?Envy

Nutribullet - take out the stones (!), but skin, pulp, fibre whatever you want to call all that, yes.
Don't know anything about diets, never do them.
Juicing - extracts the juice only - you don't eat the fibre.

YANBU it reminds me of drinking puréed baby food. We are now a nation of lazy babies.

I love a nutribullet every so often and so do the dc. I enjoy one for breakfast or just as a mid afternoon snack. The dc love it, mainly for a banana milkshake but sometimes for other random concoctions. A couple of times a week max though, not daily.

I find it excellent when one of us has a stomach bug. The dc will drink most juices when Ill so it's nice to know they've had a load of raw veg/fruit/salad if nothing else.

Yes, juicing strips the juice from the pulp and fibre, so you're basically getting a pure sugar hit, no different from drinking orangeade with a few extra vitamins thrown in.

Fibre acts as a matrix and a gel to slow down the absorption of sugar to the liver at a rate that is safely metabolised. Think of one of those hair collector traps that goes over the plug hole and how it slows down the water drainage.

When you get a fast hit of fructose in juiced fruit, it gets converted to fat around the liver and can contribute to insulin resistance, T2 diabetes, pancreatitis etc. So eat fruit & veg whole as it came from nature Smile

Good things like protein powders? I can think of many good foods to consume which would provide protein, none of them would involve protein powder Confused

I use protein powder in a shake for when I'm in a rush, or after the gym
Greens powder in it too just for extra nutrients and vitamins

Juicing is different. I have a cold press juicer. General rule is eat fruit, juice veg.

Have a look at the juicing book www.juicingbook.com/vegetables

I juice once a day, mainly greens. It's not a meal replacement.

Can you? Good for you. So can I. I didn't say anything about foods not providing protein. The fact that some foods provide protein doesn't mean that protein powder isn't good.

If you juice fruits. Veg is a different matter. Root veg in moderation.

I bought a juicer about 8 years ago when it was all the rage. Was many mn threads and we all encouraged each other. It as as fucking nightmare. The thing was helping to clean. You'd end up getting fucking fruit flies cos it wouldn't completely clean and wee tiny bits of fruit would be left on mesh. Most of the fruit ended up in the bin part of it. With like a cm of juice. The drink was generally nice. But was an expensive way to do it and lots of waste/cleaning up.

I love m nutribullet. It's fast. Only 2 part to clean...the blade and the cup. Much easier.

I have a nutribullet. Apparently the great thing about making smoothies in them is you are then consuming fresh veg raw, so obtaining maximum nutrients from them. The recipe book that came with it has outrageously healthy recipes in it.. but I mainly just use it as a blender for soup. It is really powerful, makes things wonderfullying smooth, looks nice on the kitchen counter and hardly takes up any space. I'm pleased I got one. Might start the healthy smoothies in the new year...lol

Juicing has been at thing for like ten years. It just tastes much nicer fresh than buying the juice available in supermarkets.

Ooo I just saw the dehydrater on that website too! Occasionally I think I’d like to try veganism but then I forget and have burgers.
