Opt-In or Opt-Out

AIBU to feel that you should opt IN to office secret santas? Have been lumbered with taking part in an office SS because i failed to read the whole email telling people about how it was such a huge success last year (didn't take part) that they're running it again. Trouble is, at the end of the email there was a piece that said if you don't want to take part, you have to opt-out. As I did not want to take part I read half the email then deleted it. So basically I'm screwed. I have bought a SS gift and will say no more this year, but part of me is really seething. Since when was an office thing like this an 'opt-out'? I'm no scrooge btw - I just feel that the £5 - 6 limits put on these things just mean that you both buy and receive cr@p which I can do without.

It's not really that hard to read a full email though.

Well the thing is some poor sod has also been lumbered with buying a present for your miserable self so you should have at least opted out to get your name taken off the list and not have them waste their money too

Everything should be opt in. Consent should never, ever be assumed, from Secret Santas to mailing lists and anything else.

It should be opt in. I never read bollocks emails like that from the annoying office organiser

I think you just have to play along this year, and be more aware of it next year so you can opt out. Don’t get stressed about it. Waste of energy.

This secret santa thing does seem to be getting a bit out of hand and causing problems. Somebody didn't get a gift last year though she gave one. And now you don't want to take part but now have to. I agree just go along with it all and like me breathe a sigh of relief on 1st January. Great Christmas is over for another year. Shouldn't be like this but it is these days.
