Moving from Scotland to England today (7 hour drive). Have spent the last week packing up the flat, finalising the sale, cleaning for the new owners etc. We hired a removal company who came over to do a survey on how much stuff we had - seemed really nice and professional. We were happy with their quote and they came round once more to deliver boxes for us to use.

So today is move day. They were 2 hours late to start with which completely messed up our plans but we let that go as at this point we really needed to get on with things (we have an 18 month and 6 week old to deal with too so you can imagine the stress). Anyway they came in, took our sofa to the van and then called us (from the van) saying because they were so late they were going to pick up two colleagues who they had arranged to help out to make things quicker. I was hesitant but he said it would take 15 minutes max. Anyway they never came back and the sofa had been dumped by the front door.

So I’m now sat here on the floor in a flat completed packed away in boxes with two babies wondering what the hell to do next? We managed to get another removal company to agree to pick our stuff up tomorrow although can’t deliver until next week but we’ll take that as the flat is no longer ours after tomorrow. This means we have to stay here tonight with no beds for any of us as we’ve taken them all apart. We had a hotel booked halfway down the m6 which we won’t be using so we lose out on that and have also paid the removal guy £200 deposit.

I guess what I want to know is ways in this sotuation? I know it’s not aibu but I’m desperate here! Can we take action against them? Can we get our £200 back? Money reimbursed for the hotel? I’m so angry that someone could do this - if they came and thought the job was too big they could have at least told us. Would be really grateful for some helpful advice right now

Threaten to take them to small claims. That usually works. If they don't cough the money up, then actually take them to court. Also, spread the word far and wide that they are crooks! Name and shame.

That is truly a shit situation to leave you in. I have no advice but you have my full sympathy. Could you book into a hotel for tonight and get the move over with and then figure out what you can do about the removal firm. Flowers

Oh no how awful.

Have you phoned the hotel? If they know what’s happened they might be willing to reimburse you? Or if it’s a chain they could maybe transfer the booking to a hotel near you?

Fb? Twitter? Name and shame them ASAP.

I would definitely Not let it drop.

Shock nightmare! Totally agree with the small claims court it’s really easy to do yourself (voice of bitter experience) although obviously not until after you actually get moved.
Unfortunately apart from informing them by writing of your intent I don’t think you can do much more until you are settled especially with 2 such littleys

Is it a large company? Do they have social media? I would name and shame everywhere possible-what an absolute cock up.
Can you nip out anywhere and buy a blow up mattress/es? Or local B&B? Poor you OP, that is shit, especially with two such small children.

Find their FB page and rip them a new one. Bastards!!

Have a look on the local Facebook selling sites (they are probably on there looking for business) and name and shame them. Also look for your areas scammers name and shame page. It’s bloody disgusting that they’ve done that to you, considering you aren’t just moving round the corner and could take stuff yourself if the worst happened.

Well, be more polite than I said. I'd definitely question them openly and expect an answer. What a shabby way to treat you!

Were they a proper company or something you found off Facebook? If the latter then unfortunately it's fairly common.

Really hope it all goes smoothly from now on. Moving is hellish. Moving with tiny children is double hell!

What sort of twats do that to someone with a 6 week old baby and young toddlerShock.

Name and shame them, don't stop until they pay back every single penny you lost from their shitty attitude.

That’s awful, call the hotel and explain what’s happened maybe they will take pity or just take an admin fee and refund the rest? As for the company look for them on Facebook and Twitter and shame the twats!Angry

You might not get anywhere but as this is more fraud than breach of contract, I’d consider going to the police.

That is terrible. A friend actually hired a removal firm and paid a deposit. They loaded up their van with all her possessions and disappeared with them.

How awful, sorry op Flowers
What kind of heartless shithouses do that, esp to a family
with young babies.

Report
CassandraCross · 29/11/2017 19:13

That's awful OP. I hope you can take action against them but they sound like charlatans and I don't hold out much hope of you seeing any money back.

Naming and shaming on FB & Twitter sounds like the route to go down.

Is there anyway you could check into a B&B or Travelodge type thing for tonight? It would be better than sleeping on the floor of your flat.

Plead your case with the hotel on the M6 you never know they might be kind-hearted enough to refund your deposit.

Sorry you've been put in this position, it's a terrible way to treat people at an already stressful time. Good luck with your move when you eventually get under way.

Take them to small claims court, and sue them for all your expenses and the difference in price between what they would have charged and what you've had to pay the new company.
