if you are genuinely rich, what do you ask for and what do you get your other half, or your kids?

I'm interested cos we went on holiday this year and seen some enormous superyachts and I just wonder, what do those types of people get their kids or each other for Christmas?

Its not a problem I'll ever have.

And of course I'm jealous, but I'm more nosey than anything else.

Probably not as much as you'd think. The Royal Family are traditionally very frugal when it comes to gift giving.

I have a good friend who is very wealthy, she and her partner actually do have a boat and a helicopter, for example, surprisingly they really don't go crazy in terms of the number of gifts they give each-other but tend to give one sentimental present each.

I think last year she got a necklace (probably expensive but not overly flashy) and she bought him a leather holdall which was embossed with initials (probably expensive but not immediately evident).

My friend prefers to splash the cash at Christmas by holding a big dinner party for friends and family instead as she gets more joy from that. I think it's a nicer idea too as it doesn't leave people feeling they need to spend a fortune on her and her partner to reciprocate.

I have a stinking rich aunt/uncle/cousins. They buy Christmas jumpers and socks because they don't need anything. They always get us fortnum and mason hampers, the really expensive ones and I always buy them a posh Aldi Christmas cake.

The really wealthy folk I know don't go overboard at Christmas. A cashmere sweater, posh wellies or Kitchenaid type gifts.

But it's cars for 18th birthdays, significant jewellery for 40th birthdays and amazing holidays for special wedding anniversaries.

Financial Times used to do a supplement every so often on gift ideas for the super rich. Yachts, watches, jewellery, Bentleys, amazing experience days.

The same sort of things as ‘normal’ people give just much more expensive versions.
Eg Last year MIL wanted some £8 primary jeans. Super rich would probably give some £10,000 designer ones
MIl got DH a watch one year cost less than £100, super rich would give a diamond encrusted rolex

I worked with lots of very high income families and they seem to buy quite big things for kids - tech, sports equipment etc but they seemed to buy very little for each - just a book or pair of boots or a jumper.

The rich people I know give token gifts - they can afford to buy iPads or clothes whenever, so it's more like nice chocolates, cashmere gloves, that kind of thing. Yy to expensive meals out or hotel stays for visiting, though.

At the risk of being labelled a snob, I suspect the "helicopter for Christmas" crowd would be those who are not used to having lots of money.

I worked for a very wealthy family and was very surprised to be given a cashmere and silk Hermès shawl. Lovely gift and it's still beautiful after many years.

My GPs had an awful lot of money (e.g. Had a rather nice Bentley etc).
I got a postal order for £20 for xmas the year before they died
