To spend this much on a holiday?

DH and I are looking into next years holidays. We're a family of 4 with DS, 3, and DD who is 10 months.
We don't do too badly and tend to enjoy a couple of long weekends and an overseas trip each year. I've been on mat leave for a while though so we're not quite as flush as usual.
We were all set in a trip to Spain next summer costing £3k all inclusive which is our budget, but to cut a long story short an opportunity has arisen to go further afield to Asia with a group of friends to celebrate DHs and his friends 40th birthdays. His friend lives in Australia. Once spending money is added to the mix we're looking closer to £5k.
I'm not averse to travelling the distance with the little ones but it feels like a lot for a summer holiday and I'm worried that the location is more for us than for them at the age they're at. Our friends have kids same age though so there would be a few of them.

We can afford it but there's other things we'd like to spend money on next year if we can so it just feels a bit flash. DH is keen though and already getting pretty excited..😐

If you can afford to go, GO! Spain is boring and even if the children don't remember it, they will thank you for being adventurous parents!
