AIBU?

Greedy house sellers

I'm selling my house at the mo. Am leaving things like curtain poles, curtains etc because a)they were bought to match the interior b)they won't necessarily fit elsewhere and c) I can't frankly be arsed to take them down and make good the holes and repaint areas in every room.

Stupidly I thought this was pretty much the civilised thing to do. However the house I'm buying, they are offering to sell me the poles/curtains in the house. Lounge windows (small cottage windows) - £350 a pair.... I have no recollection of what they were like but I don't remember them being hand embroidered in gold thread or anything to justify that cost! How can they even think that's okay? I declined obviously....

AIBU to think that you either leave such items or offer them for sale at a reasonable second hand price?

(Oh and on the vague off chance the vendors are reading this, I think taking out a few years old integrated appliance or offering it at £500 isnt polite either. (I can buy a new one for not much more!)

To be honest that is the sort of thing that would make me pull out of the purchase (integrated appliances)

Grin Sorry to laugh but this has brought back a memory I can laugh about now. When my parents bought their home 20ish years ago they arrived on moving in day to find all the carpets gone, light switches and fittings gone, and the roof tiles off one of their outbuildings!! The woman they bought from offered to sell the stuff back to them for £5k under the table! Shock they sorted it all out and didn’t have to hand over any money. Stressful at the time but we laugh now Grin

That's just fucking RUDE. How can integrated appliances be sold separately?!

Report
Earslaps · 28/11/2017 22:51

I would think any integrated appliances would be considered non-removable? Was the appliance listed in the particulars?

There is a high chance they are chancers, and will end up leaving you the lot. Cheeky bastards.

How annoying.

I'm with you OP. We left cutrains etc in our last property. Also all white goods, presumed integrated had to be left?

We were delighted to find our vendors had done the same. Except maybe the curtains, they are something to behold.....

I remember my parents refusing the buy the threadbear stair carpet from their seller who was moving into a flat. We managed on bare floorboards for a few years ok with no problems back in the 1980s.

Dunno, if we sold, I'd take both curtain poles (everywhere else has shutters) because they're gorgeous, why would I just leave behind expensive stuff?

Just checked the house details and it says "space for x". Fine, let them take it. It just galls that someone would do that!

All I can say is that I am blessed to have such good vendors. They are the loveliest people, take a real pride in their home, and along with the EA have been incredibly easy to work with.

Before you suggest I’m living in a parallel universe...let me assure you that my solicitor has been pretty shit.

Happened to my DH, he purchased the house we are currently in before we were in a relationship.

The previous owner offered to sell my DH the fire?! DH declined and seller removed it, leaving a hole in the wall?!

Some people are strange!

What was listed on the particulars you have to fill in about fixtures and fittings? It should say what is being left and what is being taken. And I agree that integrated appliances should be part of the fixtures and not be moved.

I thought integrated appliances had to be left??

We left ours, with fitted blinds and curtain poles. I thought that was reasonable.

Our sellers unscrewed curtain poles and not replaced them with anything. They also removed light fittings - we’re still in darkness in our front room!

I declined the offer to buy a big wardrobe from our vendor. Lo and behold, I had a call the day before completion, asking if I'd like it for nothing as with hindsight, it was too big and awkward for them to dismantle and move. So you may end up with them even if you say 'no thanks'.

Yeah, they are chancers. Re the curtains & poles, call their bluff. Tell them you expect holes to be filled, no marks left from removal, etc. They will just leave them.

I am buying through housesimple and I too have a lovely vendor. Once the transaction is done with, I’d love to keep in touch with her.

Your contract should specify what fixtures and fittings remain as part of the purchase.

Ours ripped out the fitted wardrobe that was even written in the particulars! Leaving the wall needing to be replastered and they took the doorbell! Some people are shameless

Yep we've been there. Turned up on moving day to discover carpets ripped up, curtain poles pulled out of walls and not a single light bulb in the place. Bonkers.

My parents sold a house once to a British guy who was absolutely amazed they left the stove, carpets and curtains. This was in Australia where that's what you do.

They sold the house mid 80s and still talk about it!

We've bought one house here in London and our sellers were lovely! They left a house full of furniture and shed full of useful tools for £200.

I was pregnant with dd1 and dh and I had budgeted around £2000 to furniture the house so it was great to be able to splurge on a lovely big bed and bank the rest Smile

Mind you his (Scottish) twin brother lived in the same small town in Australia my sister moved to with her dh so we were all Shock and very much saw the house sale as a peculiar twist.

I'd seriously look again at anyone who proposes removing integrated appliances if you don't pay them extra money.

Report

I don't think I could be bothered dealing with these sort of people that want money for everything. Unless I loved the house I'd walk away. I didn't think that they could take curtain poles as they're fixtures. And agree say you want the holes filled and place redecorated if there's a mark. Idiots.

When we bought our house seven years ago, the vendor offered to sell us curtains that were up in the sitting room. Thinking it would buy us some time before we would need to buy our own, we asked how much they wanted for them. They wanted £1000. The curtains were ten years old. We declined. Ok, it is a big bay window, but I later had made to measure at £28/yard fabric made and put up for the same price.

Also offered to sell us a wall mounted bathroom mirrored cabinet for £350. I bought a better one, brand new, for less.
