Broken ankle?

I think I've broken my ankle, at first I thought it might be sprained but the pain is getting worse and is unbearable even whilst lying still. I know I need to go to hospital but how the hell am i going to get there? I wouldn't be able to manage into a taxi, what do I do??

Call 111?

Can't get through, huge waiting times. I'm sure they will just tell me to go to hospital as well.

Can you get a taxi to the hospital? And kind of hobble to it?

use an umbrella like a cane and hop with the help of the cab driver.
while you wait, cold pack and elevate above your heart....yes that means a whack load of pillows.

If you ring 111 and tell them you think you’ve broken your ankle then they will tell you to go to A&E so it can be x-rayed.

Can you hop from your front door to the taxi? I’m sure they’ll be able to help you get out once you get to the hospital.

If you've broken your ankle and moving at all is extremely painful, they'll probably have to send an ambulance - I've got a cab to the hospital before with a broken ankle but if you genuinely can't move it without severe pain then you're going to struggle otherwise.

I take it you've alrrady taken both paracetamol and ibuprofen, and iced it / elevated it? That will give some relief but may not be much help if it's a bad injury.

It may not even be broken - I had an horrific fall a couple of years ago and my entire foot from toes to mid calf swelled up insane amounts, and there was black bruising on both sides and down the sides of my foot. Went to A&E after a couple of days lying still as it was so bad- no fracture even, they suspected ligament damage. Didn't give me anything for it. Was more painful than the breaks and two years on I still have pain from it. Nearly 20 years ago I had what I thought was a sprain and walked round on it in pain for months - hurt it again six months later, went for an X-ray and they told me I'd broken it previously and it hadn't healed right. Hence all the injuries since.

Ankle injuries can be awful.

If there's someone who can drive you, travel in the back with your foot on a pillow and hold another pillow over the top to keep it as still as possible.

Hope it improves, but definitely get an X-ray.

If you get through to 111, they ask if you can make it to the hospital and if not, they can request transport of some sort and assistance so that it's not necessarily an ambulance.

Is the skin broken? If so, you should definitely call 111. If you’ve really broken your ankle there is no way you’ll be able to hop to a taxi or anything similar. When I broke mine it hurt with every step the person who was carrying me took. You need to strap it up, rest it, apply ice (indirectly) and keep it up as much as you can. Then get someone to take you to hospital tomorrow (you’d probably end up waiting for hours anyway).

It’s also worth noting that a sprain typically hurts more than a break, due to soft tissue damage. Take paracetamol and ibuprofen if you can.

I hope you’re ok. Let us know how you get on.

Slipped on the ice last night and went over on it wearing high heels.
It's too sore to even hop now, any movement is agony. My husband is here so could help me into a taxi but couldn't come with me as we have a baby at home, wouldn't be able to carry baby and help me. I'm not sure what I'd do at the other end after being dropped off.
Got through to 111 they said I need to go to A&E but they can't arrange transport.
I think I will have to wait until tomorrow until people are awake and I can phone around.

He can help you into a taxi, and the hospital staff can help at the other end. Or wait until the morning and have your husband drive you. I doubt they’d send transport for a minor injury, there is the expectation you can find someone to help.

I wouldn't mind being woken up by a friend in pain needing help getting to A&E......sometimes we all need to ask for help.

Ask the taxi driver to go into the a&e to ask for crutches/wheelchair?

Report
ItsHuge · 26/11/2017 00:26

I think your husband could manage to get you and the baby in the taxi and go with you. Alternatively he could just help you to the taxi. There will be people to help at the hospital.
The taxi driver might even offer to help.
I wouldn't wait at home 🤷🏻‍♀️

I've sent messages to people asking for help in the morning. My grandpa has a spare wheelchair so someone could go and collect it from him tomorrow and that would help a lot.

Hope you manage to get seen soon, in the mean time, rest, elevation and pain killers. If it gets worse overnight phone for an ambulance.

On my way to A&E now. I can't even hop so a taxi driver we use for my grandparents had to pick up the wheelchair from my grandpa then come into the house to get me. Thank god I will be seen to soon. My foot is freezing and starting to go a bit bluey/ white
