Ex-landlord has deducted extra rent from our deposit 'cos of keys

Our tenancy ended two weeks ago on Friday. We moved out that day obviously. Ex-landlord had asked us to drop off keys to the estate agent. By the time we'd finished with all the cleaning, etc. tho, it was pretty late and they were closed. Next day was Saturday and I was working all day, then Sunday the agent was closed all day. I got up really early to drop them off before work on Monday morning. The landlord has just told us today that he has continued to charge us rent over the weekend and deducted it from our deposit. I am pretty peed off about this. He never told us it was what would happen. He texted me on Saturday morning saying the agent had told him they'd not got the keys yet. So I explained about how it had got late on Friday as we were doing an extra good job cleaning for him and I was at work, so I'd take them in Monday if that was OK. Well he never said it wasn't OK. He just said that while we still had keys we were still legally considered to have access, not that he'd be charging us for this! I told him it was fine as we definitely weren't planning to re-enter and we weren't!!
